‘The Uninvited’ (2009) Movie Review

In “The Uninvited” a young girl named Anna (Emily Browning) is sent to a mental facility after her sick mother is killed when their guest house catches on fire. She eventually gets out of the mental facility , and comes home to find that her father,Steven (David Strathairn) has a new girlfriend, Rachael (Elizabeth Banks) who was the nanny for her mom when she was sick. She doesn’t like Rachael very much. Soon after meeting her, she starts seeing Ghosts of her mom and three children that lost their lives in the past. They tell her that Rachael is a killer.

As she begins talking with her sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel) and her boyfriend who supposedly saw what happened during the night of the fire that killed her mother ; she begins to think Rachael is behind it all. She convinces her sister of this as well. So, her and Alex begin to investigate Rachael’s background ,and find out that she is not who she says she is. They make it known to her that they are going to tell their father. This leads to a series of events which include Rachael trying to drug them,Anna fighting her off, and going to the police to try and stop her. It all ends in one final gruesome conclusion with a final twist which is everything I just wrote is all in Anna’s head.

When she realizes this, the movie traces back to every event and shows what was really going on. Basically, Anna was imagining talking with her sister, Alex the whole time since she was actually killed in the fire with her mother. The fire was actually set accidentally when a candle fell onto some flammable stuff. Basically the movie reveals that Anna dreamed up the whole Rachael being the killer stuff in her head which, again leads to a final gruesome conclusion. I don’t want to give it away, but I’ll just say that Anna is still alive and Rachael isn’t alive. Rachael was indeed “Uninvited”.

My Take : This one was sort of difficult to review since I kind of felt duped at the end. They totally lead us to believe one scenario was going on all the way until the very end, and then sprung the twist on us. Back tracing through the entire movie to reveal what was really going on,and that what we originally saw was all in Anna’s imagination. Also there were no hints whatsoever that I could see that would’ve given it away before the very end because everything seemed so natural especially the part about her sister, Alex. There was no way you could’ve known she was dead until the very end when they reveal what really happened. That’s just me,though. I always at least like a little hint to try and figure out what is going on. With all that said, it did have me on the edge of my seet wondering what would happen next. If you don’t mind being duped a bit at the end, I would recommend this movie. It is interesting.

  • The only hint I can think of off the top of my head is when they are sitting in the living room and her Dad’s girlfriend was talking about the dinner party. Then only Anna got upset and left the room in disgust. While her sister just stayed there. Hard to predict but , I would rather be duped; then know everything that was going to happen.
