‘Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail’ (2009) Movie Review
In “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” Madea (Tyler Perry) is hauled into court for having a crazy mad temper and beating up a cop. She gets off on a technicality, but is warned that if she ever shows up in court again, she show would go to jail. She also has to get anger management counseling from none other than Dr. Phil who makes a cameo appearance in the movie.
Meanwhile Attorney, Joshua Hardaway (Derek Luke) takes on a case to prosecute a young prostitute, Candace Washington (Keshia Knight Pulliam) thats addicted to drugs. However, after seeing that Candace is an old friend from childhood, he realizes that he cannot take the case. He gives the case over to his hot shot attorney,and fiancee, Linda (Ion Overman) . Madea ends up in court again over a parking space debacle, and dropping a lady’s car a couple of feet onto the ground with a forklift. She gets 5-10 years in prison from Judge Mathis who also makes a cameo appearance in the film.
Joshua tries to help Candace out,and in doing so puts his relationship with Linda in jeopardy as she doesn’t like him giving her all the attention. Linda is also a corrupt attorney that trumps up charges on defendant’s cases which causes them to do more time in jail so Candace secretly becomes her next victim, and gets sentenced to 17 years in prison. While in jail, Madea protects Candace from some big lesbian chic named Big Sal (Robin Coleman) that tries to hit on her. Joshua begins to research Candace’s case and starts to realize that something isn’t right. He finds out from a friend who musters up the courage to tell him that Linda trumped up charges on Candace’s case to get her 17 years prison. Joshua ends up dumping Linda at the alter, and gets Candace,Madea,and some of the other women out of jail that were illegally put there by Linda tampering with their case files. Joshua also realizes and tells he’s Candace that he’s in love with her.
My Take : This movie was one non-stop laugh comedy after another. Tyler Perry plays three different characters in the film. Another funny character he played was Joe, and he would get high smokin the pipe. He was so hilarious. And of course Madea made me laugh so hard I was cryin, and the scene between her and Doctor Phil was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Judge Mathis was great as the judge who sent her to jail. The film is just filled with nonstop laughs that included : Madea shooting up her house to get rid of party people, using a bunch of God and Jesus references to get out of trouble with the judge, and beating the crap out of a lesbian inmate named Big Sal. I recommend that everyone go see this movie.
