Adoption Groups Want To Boycott ‘Orphan’ Horror Movie

The new Warner Bros. “Orphan” movie that’s set to release this Friday July 24,2009 has stirred up a frenzy among America’s adoption community, according to reports. Adoption advocates are reportedly urging a boycott of the movie. They are currently trying to set up a meeting with Warner Bros. CEO Barry Meyer to discuss their concerns.
The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute wrote a letter to him, stating, “We are concerned that in addition to its intended entertainment value, this film will have the unintended effect of skewing public opinion against children awaiting families both in the United States and abroad.”
Warner Bros are reportedly taking the concerns seriously, and are considering adding a pro adoption message at the end of the film when it comes out on DVD.
The first trailer for the film which has been out for the past three months has outraged the adoption advocates,Warner Bros. reportedly responded by removing a highly criticized line from it where the orphan Ester says, “It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own.”
Warner Bros. spokes person Scott Rowe has stated that “Orphan” is simply a make believe story. He also said, “It is not a depiction of any real-life events or situations and has never been portrayed as anything but an entirely fictional story. We apologize if we appeared insensitive with the initial trailer, as it’s never our intent to offend anyone with our products.”
What do you think? Should “Orphan” be boycotted ?

Nope- I’m actually going to see it opening day because of all of the hoopla going on about it. I can certainly understand what the groups are upset about but at the same time they’re pretty much saying that NO movie should put orphans in a bad light- and that’s censorship.
Besides, I think that the majority of people out there are mature enough to know the difference between reality & fiction. This won’t alter their perception of orphans. They’ll just see the movie & go “Wow- this one girl was really messed up in comparison to everyone else around her.” The movie doesn’t say that all orphans are bad. They just say that this one person was a bad egg.
I mean seriously… the groups are protesting the film to congress. Don’t you think they’re taking this a bit too far? I don’t think they’re thinking of the future repercussions. Congress may step in & say that the filmmakers were out of line. They may not do any legal action, but this would cause all future filmmakers to think “Oh, we can’t say anything bad about orphans” & alter their films & scripts. This would lead to other groups doing the same thing until… guess what?
Until nobody can say anything because their work is being quietly censored by the various groups. This is one of the biggest dangers of society- that we are allowing people to quietly take away our freedom of speech.
I’m not saying that the orphan rights people don’t have a reason to be upset- I just think that they’re doing it wrong. They should just make a statement saying “Oh, this isn’t the way it really is” & laugh the movie off. Their protests could end up costing much more in the long run…
About the movie Orphan, is beyond cruel to have done this to orphan, adopted and children in foster care.
Parents have control of only their own children not other children on the internet watching the trailer.
Children can be very cruel, a lot of orphans live in foster care and is well documented they get abused by foster parents and foster siblings, and it happens in adoptive families too.
This movie is more ammunition against them and will make them a target for bullying and more abuse.
The emotional pain Orphan children already feel is hard to bear, they already see themselves as unwanted, they self blame and see themselves as bad children.
There is a lot of self-hate and self-blame involved.
Warner Bros could have given the movie another name like “Esther” with a small different twist, being sensitive to orphans and to avoid feeding into the psychological trauma orphans already have, but keep the same movie an evil child………It could have been very well done.
To me this is intentional infliction of emotional distress on orphans, adopted and children in foster care.
Shame on Waner Bros, all for a buck.
Pamela.
Lol, is funny how all of a sudden the movie had un “unexpected turn” ya, i doubt that the midget prostitute ending i read, (because i had no intention to see the movie) had.
Warner Bros, Castle entertainment, and Appain Way must have realized they screwed up royally and saw themselves getting “hanged” from The Empire State building by children rights advocates and possibly civil rights lawyers and they were like “hehe we intended it all along, really it wasn’t a kid, it was a,a..hrmm a midget! yah, that is a midget!…..who was also a,a, hrmm a prostitute who passed as a child to get into our coutry illegally, yeah, that’s it! We were trying to give out the message to midget prostitutes from Eastern Europe to stay out of our country…..that was our intention from the start ya, really…..”
Nice try Warner Bros………..
this is yet another example of people taking things too far. Kids are not going to make fun of anyone for being an orphan anymore than they already do and orphans are not going to feel sorry for themselves anymore than they already do. The movie is targeted at adults or supposed adults, not children. “This movie is more ammunition against them and will make them a target for bullying and more abuse.” -Idiot.
I have an idea.. there is a free big mac advertisement on my screen. Lets target Macdonalds for giving away free food and making everyone fat.
If you are sensitive to the plight of orphans and the movie offends you, don’t go and watch it. Surely don’t take your children to see it.
If you decide that you are not going to adopt a child because of this movie, then that is a good thing, because you are too stupid to adopt a child anyway.
Why don’t we spend some time and resources discussing something that actually matters..
I sure at least this movie came to your mind when you thinking of adopt someone, it doesn’t neccessary mean esther’s story would happen to you. but you may take that a little bit “will the child turned out evil?”…..particularly, in the asia countries like india or china. where people aren’t think like the americans. I’m-myself however not an adopted child from the orphanage but similar. my dad is the rich old man while my mom used to be his maid and my dad already has got his wife and family……my mom left me with him and his wife because she couldn’t stay with my him since he already married and she is too poor to take care of me. I know his wife and her childrens gave me a money and raised me up but they don’t like me that much because I am a child of their enemy. and this film makes the situation between me and them getting more bad.
