Tyler Perry Addresses Spike Lee’s Insulting Comments

tyler perry image

Tyler Perry addresses Spike Lee’s insulting comments, according to BET. Apparently in a recent interview, movie director Spike Lee said that he believes Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns,” “House of Payne,” and “Madea” movies are coonery and buffoonery.

Then last night on “60 Minutes,” Tyler Perry addressed those comments by stating, “Madea is a cross between my mother and my aunt. She’s the type of grandmother that was on every corner when I was growing up.She smoked. She walked out of the house with her curlers and her muumuu and she watched everybody’s kids. She didn’t take no crap. She’s a strong figure where I come from. In my part of the African-American community. And I say that because I’m sure that there are some other parts of the African-American community that may be looking at me now going, ‘Who does he think he’s speaking of?’ But, for me, this woman was very, very visible.”

I’m not a big fan of Spike Lee these days. I mean he took “Spike TV” to court a couple of years back, accusing them of stealing his name. I think he might be a little full of himself.

I love your work Tyler. You are funny and smart. Spike Lee is nothing compared to you.

  • Natasha:

Spike Lee is being a hater. He needs to think back when was an upcoming producer and actor and the negative feedback that he got. Had this been a white person making this comment people would be all over it, and we all should. he is being a MAJOR hater and we should be lifting each other up with our words, not pulling each other down. As far as “coonery and bafoonery” what about movies like Crooklyn? Would he say these things about his own works? Think before you speak SPIKE!!

  • Remember This:

Spike Lee is just a “hater”. Tyker, you are tall, dark and VERY handsome and very successful which is why Spike just so jealous

  • Karen Charles:

The Lord is using Tyler to do his will. Everything that Tyler is doing is related to the family. Please let think of a way to get alone instead of stabbing each other in the back. Spike I will pray for you.

When i saw the partial headline:Tyler Perry and Spike Lee… I got excited because I thought they were collaborating on something. To follow this story and read that Spike Lee made such comments (if that’s true/i didn’t see the interview) is very, very dissappointing to say the least. You know, a lot of times we drag ourselves down and this is a prime example. Both men are brilliant artists in his own right and have their own take on life; struggles and successes. I am no Spike Lee fan, his comments to me may reflect his own work. Every work that was put forth by Mr. Lee was not inspiring neither were they positively thought provoking, but I bet they had meaning and relevance to him. Their styles and take on life are totally different and I’m thankful for Mr. Tyler Perry’s work in this day and age. A Spike Lee mentality is not what we need at this moment. Take a chill pill Mr. Lee (you had your turn) and learn to accept the success of others even when their point of views and/or artistry don’t line up with your own.

Spike Lee is just plain jealous of Tyler Perry. Tyler’s films are educational, inspirational and they all have a positive meaning behind them. They show where a person can grow from their mistakes and become positive and productive in society. Spike Lee’s movies are lousy to watch I can’t recall one movie that I enjoyed watching. His movies have alot of profanity, nudity, violence are deeming toward women. You need to get over yourself Spike and get with the program.
Tyler Perry is a Godly man, tall, dark and handsome.

  • Meoff:

Spike lee is a punk !!!!!!!!

  • Meoff:

Tyler, keep up the good work, spike very jealous……..

  • Shay:

I can understand both sides. Lee grew-up in NYC. As a native New Yorker, we did not see Medea on every corner. We did not see our grandmothers, they lived in the South. LOL. But when I did visit my grandmother, she was loud, gossiper, and took care of her children’s children – lot of kids. She was a smoker.. but loud.

Bottomline – both directors have different live experiences that they bring to the table. We can like the all or like some of it. Tyler – with all the problems in the world, it is refreshing to watch your works and lauge.

Lee – create something. Do something.. remember you were the creator of Brooklyn. What was that? LOL.

  • Shay:

Also, black on black insults are not good for the media. Lee – keep it to yourself. Keep the peace.

  • Roni Smith:

Okay, I have to take a deep breath with this one. Spike Lee is right. He is speaking from his perspective. He is a filmmaker, which means he studied the craft. Tyler Perry is a movie maker, which means he’s writing what he knows and he’s servicing his audience instead of servicing his characters. He’s a dynamite producer as you can see from how well his films do at the box office. But his movies are not supposed to be viewed as a serious character exploration. That’s Spike Lee’s films. Tyler Perry’s movies are a hard watch for serious filmmakers. They have studied for years to understand the craft and for someone like Perry to come along and create a sensation is a hard pill to swallow. His films are like many student films I’ve seen -just with white actors.

  • Rhonda Simmons:

I hate Tyler’s films and only buy them from bootleggers as I do not wish to help him make a dime. For example, why does the sustah in “I can do Bad” have to be rescued by a Latino? The black men were said to be child molesters or a preacher. But the hero is a damn illegal! COme on Tyler, could you not have made that character a brother from Jamaica or at least a Black Latino?

  • Anonymous:

Spike Lee is just hating because he has been in the Black movie making genre, for so much longer, but has yet to establish a station of oneupmanship above brother Perry.
