Usually, killing an older vampire has serious repercussions, but the writers won't follow through with this, because it would mean the end of Damon's character. If vampires were real Damon would not last very long, because other vampires would consider him reckless, and kill him off. Also, if vampires were real, and the rings that Damon and Stefan wear were also real, they would be worth billions of dollars on the open market. If other vampires knew about those rings, they would be hunting Damon and Stefan down 24/7. The only exception would be if the rings only work for a certain blood line.
