‘As The World Turns’ soap opera gets canceled by CBS. According to the Associated Press, CBS has decided to cancel its long time running soap opera, “As the World Turns.” It had been on the air since 1956,and aired its 13,661st episode yesterday. CBS says they will air the last episode of “As the World Turns” next September.

This is the 2nd soap opera that CBS has canceled this year. It recently canceled “Guiding Light,” which had been on the air for years, and years, and years. “As the World Turns” was produced by a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble. They created the term “soap operas” because they used the shows to promote products like Ivory soap and Duz laundry detergent.

These daytime dramas have been fading out as of late, due to the hard economic times. Paying all the actors and directors has proven to hurt the networks instead of helping them, especially since their are cheaper alternative like news, talk, game, and reality shows.

The “As The World Turns” cancellation leaves CBS with only two soap operas on its schedule. Those are: “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and Beautiful.”

I have watched As the world turns for about 30 years but when you added the gay relationship, it ruined it for me and many others that I talked with & ditto Guiding Light. I believe that is the real reason your soaps have tanked. We don’t like seeing two men kissing.

  • pamela kimbrell:

It truly bothers me that another soap might possibly be replaced with a game show or judge show (totally boring). Don’t you people care about anyone past 40 and what they might watch for entertainment? Maybe television is also becoming a thing of the past like radio did. Sad, Sad.

  • evelyn:

why cancel as the world turns you should cancel bold and beautiful it is so boring there is no story to that show please leave as the world turns as it is

  • Marilyn L.:

I have watched atwt for 54 years faithfully and now you
you are taking it off the air. I remember Nancy and Chris and Grandpa Hughes, Penny and young Bob Hughes. I’m a bit past 40 but always adored that family. they will leave a hole in my heart. Can’t say I slways enjoyed your storyline but so it goes, as the world turns!!!!!!!!

  • Antoinette:

I have watched atwt for 25 years, I can’t believe they would consider cancelling it. Over the years this show has helped take my mind off my worries as I’ve looked forward to it everday! I can’t stand another fake ass reality show! Or ghame show for that matter! I’m outraged….

  • can’t believe they are cancel this show and keeping bold and beautiful that is the same thing day after day you can watch it once a month and not miss a thing while as the world turns has great actors and great story line. shame on the network for this stupid move

  • Myfriend and I have watched this show since the onset when Nancy said,A cup of coffee, Chris? My mom and her mominlaw watched and we followed…We both will miss the daily events and as others said, it is a way to not think about our problems….oh well, it will give us another hour in our day

  • MAG:

I have watched ATWT on and off since the 50′s, when my Mom watch it. I have been a dedicated fan since the 70′s and have taped it since the 90′s. I will miss the characters, and their joys and heartaches ,especially Carly and Jack my favorites. Why they are cencelling it I do not understand….Bold and Beautiful would have been a better choice. ATWT has always had excellent story lines and excellent actors and actresses. I will miss it.

  • carol:

I CANT BELIEVE THAT YOUR TAKING ATWT OFF THE AIR. TAKING THE BOLD & BEAUTIFUL OFF WOULD BE A BETTER CHOISE BY FAR. I STILL MISS GUILDING LIGHT.

  • Shirley:

I cannot believe that you are taking ATWT off the air. I have watched this program since the 1950′s. I remember so many of the
characters as young people. You took The Guiding Light off and now
this. I will not be watching your station as I do not need another
game show or another judge being cute. This is very disheartening.
I will not watch Let’s Make a Deal or The Price is Right. You have
    lost me as a viewer.

  • I can’t stand watching soaps and soap-y dramas being canceled. I have never seen ATWT or GL, but I hear that they’re good. I wish I had a chance to view them before they were canceled. I agree with people above who said that they can’t stand to see a reality show come on. It’s the same, bad morals that they are teaching children and even adults: they only sleep with people and get diseases, smoke, take drugs, drink, party, and do the same thing the next day. Game shows and judge shows are all the same as well. The B&B should get canceled because it is now basically reality TV quality, what with the cheating (and with erlatives-in-law) and being forgiven, and the cheap scandals that happen. The same thing you see in reality TV. As for the first comment, there’s no need to be so homophobic. They’re trying to be realistic and teach lessons to the teens and young adults who watch ATWT.
