Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune gave it a C-. He said, “when the action’s pitched at such a ridiculous level of hyperbole, the laughs barely have enough oxygen to qualify as wheezes.”

Luke Y Thompson at E! online gave it a C+. He stated, “It could have been a lot better with a shorter run time and a stronger ending.” Lisa Schwarzbaum at Entertainment Weekly gave it a C+. She said, it was “oddly uninvolving.”

Chris Cabin at Filmcritic.com gave it a B-. He said, “At a runtime circling the two-hour mark, it remains light on its feet even in its down moments.” Kirk Honeycutt at the Hollywood Reporter gave it a C. He stated, “Logic and plausibility take a holiday in this nonstop actioner that counts on stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz to sell the nonsense.”

Kenneth Turan at the Los Angeles Times gave it a B. He said, it was “the most entertaining made-for-adults studio movie of the summer, and one of the reasons it works at all is the great skill and commitment Cruise brings to the starring role.”

Lou Lumenick at the New York Post gave it a C-. He said, it was “one of those movies that requires you to accept that every single time a character is presented with a choice, he or she will make the worst and most inexplicable one.”

A.O. Scott from the New York Times gave it a bad D-. He stated,it was “loud, seemingly interminable, and altogether incoherent.” James Berardinelli at Reelviews gave it a B. He said, “For the first time in a long time, Tom Cruise regains the form that made him one of the biggest box office stars of the late ’80s and early ’90s.”

Peter Travers at Rolling Stone gave it a C. He said, “Cruise and Diaz are in it for the action rush. You appreciate how hard they knock themselves out, but where’s the sizzle?” Mick LaSalleat the San Francisco Chronicle gave it a B+.
