Critics gave Tyler Perry ‘For Colored Girls’ movie mediocre reviews. Lionsgate released their new Tyler Perry branded drama flick “For Colored Girls” into theaters today,and most of the top movie critics didn’t have great things to say about it. However,a few of them liked it.

The movie stars: Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Michael Ealy, Kimberly Elise, Omari Hardwick, Hill Harper, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Tessa Thompson, Kerry Washington, Whoopi Goldberg, Macy Gray, Khalil Kain,and Richard Lawson.

Wesley Morris at the Boston Globe gave it a B-. He said, “The audience I saw it with didn’t seem to know whether to clap when it was over or start taking Lipitor.” Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a B-. He said, “Perry tries to be faithful to the play and also to his own boldly and simply told stories, and the two styles don’t fit together.

Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune gave it a B-. He said, “134 minutes of misjudged intensity.” Lisa Schwarzbaum at Entertainment Weekly gave it a C-. She said, “a maddeningly choppy mess of a Tyler Perry movie.”

Bill Gibron at Filmcritic.com gave it a B+. He said, “What Tyler Perry does here is daring, provocative, and a little arrogant. Kirk Honeycutt at the Hollywood Reporter gave it a bad F rating. He stated, “train wreck of a movie.”

Mick LaSalle at the San Francisco Chronicle gave it an A. He said, “a serious achievement.” Claudia Puig at USA Today gave it a D+. She said, “Where Shange melded poetry, drama and dance to explore black female identity, Perry opts for strained soap opera. Nearly all his creative decisions go wrong.”

    Beautiful movie with superb opera and mind blowin poetry. Powerful, everyone should see this movie. Tyler Perry is the man handsdown.
