Scott Bowles at USA Today gave it an A. He stated, “Menacing and meditative, Hallows is arguably the best installment of the planned eight-film franchise.” Roger Moore at the Orlando Sentinel gave it an A. He stated, “Alternately funny and touching, it’s the best film in the series, an “Empire Strikes Back” for these wizards and their wizarding world.”
Elizabeth Weitzman at New York Daily News gave it an A-. She said, “Equal parts action thriller, political parable, and multidimensional love story, “Hallows” feels sad and strong and true.”
James Berardinelli at Reelviews gave it a B. He said, “At a time when Harry Potter should be soaring to new heights, it remains curiously grounded.” Ann Hornaday at the Washington Post gave it a B. He said, “It’s half of a really good movie, full of the enchantment, emotion and incident for which the Potter series has become so fanatically cherished.”
Wesley Morris at the Boston Globe gave it a B. He stated, “One of the achievements of the “Deathly Hallows” is that it’s one of the few “Harry Potter” films not to feel like a Halloween ball.”
Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a B. He said, “The film depends more on mood and character than many of the others, and key actions seem to be alarmingly taking place off-screen.”
Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune gave it another B. He said, “The story-within-the-story regarding the deathly hallows is visualized by way of shadow-puppet style animation, and the effect is quite beautiful.”
Peter Travers at Rolling Stone gave it a C+. He said, “Like a virgin’s padded bra, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I is all tease, zero payoff.” Kenneth Turan at the Los Angeles Times gave it a C+. He stated, “To be fair to “Deathly Hallows,” the filmmakers have tried hard to fill the proceedings with battles and chases and debilitating curses. Genuine filmmaking excitement, however, is harder to provide.”
Lou Lumenick at the New York Post gave it a C. He said, “I suspect many of my fellow Muggles will join me in checking their watches at regular intervals during this extremely slow movie.”
Todd McCarthy at the Hollywood Reporter gave it a C. He stated, “This grim beginning-of-the-end odyssey has a very different feel from any of its predecessors,a development slightly more disconcerting than it is welcome.”
Amy Biancolli at the San Francisco Chronicle gave it a very bad D- rating. She said, “Most of the plot functions as an extended camping trip, and a dreary one at that.” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1″ movie is in theaters now.
