‘So You Think You Can Dance’ July 8, 2019 Auditions Revealed (Episode 5 Recap)

Hey, “So You Think You Can Dance” fans. Tonight, July 8, 2019, episode 5 did indeed air, and it featured another series of first round auditions out in Los Angeles, California. The judges: Lauriann Gibson, Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe were, of course,on hand to serve up their critiques and tickets to the next round.

Tonight’s auditions kicked off with Andrew Avila and Melany Mercedes hitting the stage. They both auditioned last season. They are ballroom dancers from the Bronx, New York. After their routine, Mary told them, “I loved the authenticity of the routine and how it wasn’t just all about tricks.”

Mary was the only one who said anything for this one. The rest of the judges just held up their tickets, indicating that it was a yes for them. So, Andrew and Melany got 4 yeses from the judges. That means they are heading to the Academy rounds.

Next, a B-boy dancer named Michael Sales arrived on stage. After his routine, Lauriann told Michael,”I love the swagger.” Dominic said, “I like your moves. It was a great audition.” Mary said, “You nailed it.” Nigel said, “I love that you stuck everything you needed to.” Michael got 4 yeses from the judges.

A female dancer from Nashville, TN, Mariah Russell, hit the stage. After her performance, Lauriann told Mariah, “I see myself in you. I want you to get there quicker in the dance.” Dominic said, “I found it very graceful.” Mary said, “You smoked it for a first audition.” Nigel said, “I love this choreography. It fits the music. It’s beautiful.” Mariah got 4 yeses from the judges.

Next, they showed a video montage of contemporary dancers that made it through to the Academy rounds. They are: Shamus Moriarty, Olivia Alboher and Luke Phillips.

After all of that, they showed Phoebe Kochis’ routine. She’s a dancer with down syndrome. After her audition, Lauriann told Phoebe, “You have so much sass.” Dominic said, “I love that you winked at me.” Mary said, “I love that you love dance.” Nigel said, “The problem is that the technique isn’t there, but I want you to come to the Academy as a guest.” So, that was sweet.

James Cody was the next dancer to hit the stage. He had apparently auditioned in three other previous seasons. It was revealed that he has a bipolar disorder.

After his performance, Dominic told James, “I hope you can do choreography.” Mary said, “I feel like you connected with everyone.” Nigel said, “You annoy me because you’re brilliant at what you do,but I don’t feel like you did your homework.”

Laurie said, “You understand your body, but I agree you need to do the work.” Dominic gave James a no. Mary gave him a yes. Nigel game him a yes, and Lauriann gave him a yes. So, that was enough yeses for James to advance to the Academy.

Next up was a female dancer named Maia Bliudnikas. She’s a contemporary dancer. After her performance, Nigel told Maia, “I loved your musicality and the way you used the stage.” Lauriann said, “You have beautiful strength.” Dominic said, “I loved it.” Mary said, “It was one of the most perfect auditions of the season.” Maia got 4 yeses from the judges.

Lastly, tap dancer Eddie Hoyt hit the stage. He just failed to make the live shows last season, but he was back! After his performance, he caused three of the judges to stand up. Mary started crying at one point.

Mary told Eddie, “You put so much into it.” Nigel said, “It was remarkable.” Lauriann said, “Your greatness needs no explanation.” Dominic was seen crying as well. Eddie Hoyt got an easy 4 yeses from the judges.

Alright guys. That’s it for all the first round auditions this season. Next week’s episode 6 will mark the beginning of the Academy rounds. It’s scheduled to air on Monday night, July 15, 2019 at approximately 8 pm central standard time on FOX.
