Tonight’s episode kicked off with the dancers getting tested in four different rounds. In the first round, they did hip hop with choreographer Luther Brown. Ballroom dancing with Sasha and Emma in the second round. Contemporary with Talia Favia in the 3rd round. Group with Mandy Moore in the 4th round.

There were 79 dancers to start this thing off. During the hip hop segment, Luther gave them some hard-hitting hip hop moves with personality. The dancers had 90 minutes to learn it.

The three hip hop girls, Dezi, Sumi and Anna went first. They all ran into some issues with the choreography on the first go around. So, Nigel had them do it a second time. The second time was much, much better. The judges liked it so much they went ahead and sent all of them through to the next round.

Next, Brandon, Michael and Samuel tried to do the choreography. Two of them are B-boys and one of them is a popper. Unfortunately for Samuel and Michael, they were not able to learn the choreography well enough to advance. So, they were eliminated. Brandon, on the other hand, did a good enough job to make it through to the next round.

Next, they showed more hip hop footage. Colton and Howard did a good enough to make it through to the next round, but they needed Trent to do a contemporary solo. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t good enough. So, he was eliminated.

At this point, 69 dancers were left. It was time for them to attempt to learn some Ballroom choreography with choreographers Sasha and Emma. They gave the dancers a Cha, Cha, Cha routine to learn. Contemporary dancer Gino got teamed up with ballroom dancer Ashley.

Derell was teamed with Dezi. Benjamin was teamed with Sofia. They all ended up doing a pretty good job that was good enough to get them through to the next round.

Next, Maia was teamed with Frank aka Ghost. Eddie was teamed with Anna. Lukas with Mariah. After they performed, the judges advanced all of them to the next round except for poor Maia. They said she wasn’t strong enough. They did tell Eddie that he needs to get more serious, and not be so happy go lucky all the time.

Also, it was revealed that Jalen, Colton, Bridget, and some other dancers were sent on their marry well out of this competition.

Next, we saw more ballroom rounds. Gianna was teamed with John John. Gabe with Sarah, and Stefan with Madison. Gianna got eliminated for not being as strong as her partner and kinda fading into the background.

They told Sarah that she needs to calm down and not overdo the moves so much. Sarah was asked to do a solo dance for her life. Afterwards, Nigel told Sarah, “You’re a great entertainer but maybe not a great dancer.” So unfortunately for Sarah, the judges decided that she’s done. They eliminated her.

At this point, there were 54 dancers left for the contemporary dance rounds with choreographer Talia Favia. Again, the dancers had 90 minutes to learn the dance. The first group consisted of Samual, Benjamin and Jay Jackson.

After their performance, the judges told Benjamin, “You aren’t the best dancer technically, but we loved your emotion.” They advanced him through to the next round along with Samuel.

Mary told Jay, “I can’t believe how far you’ve come, but the road ends here for you.” Nigel said, “We will see you again.” So, Jay got eliminated.

Bailey and John John hit the stage. They are two hip hop guys. After their performance, Dominic told them, “Every B-boy would be proud of that dance.”The judges advanced both Bailey and John John through to the next round.

And that was it for tonight’s first Academy episode. Next week, we’re going to see the final 4th round with Mandy Moore’s group dance routine. Afterwards, the group should be narrowed down to the top ten guys and top ten girls.

The next, new episode 7 is scheduled to air next Monday night, July 22, 2019 at approximately 8 pm central standard time on FOX.
