New Magnum PI Season 5 Is Happening After All. NBC Saved It

Hey, “Magnum P.I.” fans. We are back with some absolutely terrific news for your favorite show Magnum PI. A couple weeks back, we reported that Nellie Andreeva who is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of TV over at Deadline.com served up an article, revealing that NBC was in heavy negotiations to rescue Magnum PI from its cancellation fate that CBS bestowed upon it, and NBC had until June 30, 2022 to successfully carry out this rescue attempt.

Well, Nellie has returned to let us know that NBC was indeed successful! They not only picked up Magnum PI for a new season 5, they also got it for a new season 6! That’s right, guys. You will not have to worry about Magnum PI facing this same cancellation drama at the end of season 5 because 6 is already signed off on.

Here is the one caveat though, and it could just be temporary. NBC only ordered 20 new episodes that are going to be split up into the two seasons. That means seasons 5 and 6 are currently only going to be 10-episode seasons. However, Nellie did say there’s an option for NBC to order up more episodes if they want. And that could definitely happen if Magnum PI performs well for them like it did for CBS.

Nellie also reported that CBS studios and Universal TV actually had to stretch the negotiations well into last night due to them not extending the options on the cast ahead of time. However, they did reach a deal and are now rounding up the old cast to return for the new seasons 5 and 6.

It’s fully expected that Perdita Weeks aka Juliet Higgins, Zachary Knighton aka Orville, Stephen Hill aka T.C., Tim Kang aka Gordon Katsumoto, Amy Hill aka Teuila Tuileta and Jay Hernandez aka Magnum will return for the new seasons along with showrunner Eric Guggenheim and executive producers Justin Lin, John Davis and John Fox.

Magnum PI will continue to be a co-production between Universal TV and CBS Studios. Universal TV and CBS Studios have split rights. Universal TV will handle the international stuff, and CBS will deal with the domestic off-network sales.

Currently, there is no official premiere date for the new season 5 of Magnum PI. So, we’ll have to let you guys know that very important information at a later date. In the meantime, crack open your champagne bottles because Magnum PI is alive and well again!

Alright, guys. That’s all we’ve got for this latest, “Magnum P.I.” TV show report, but definitely stay tuned for more.

Very happy to see the show is coming back! I am down to the last 3 episodes of season 4 and as a fan of the original show and now this show, I am happy to see them continue this show even if its 20 more episodes and 2 seasons for now with a potential to do more seasons. This only means better quality episodes and gives the writers more time to make really good seasons and episodes. I hope like in the original series they get a bit more gritty and action oriented with tons of suspense and twists and plots like the original show, while retaining its humor and comedy. Maybe the writers could have Juliet Higgins have a brother named Jonathan Higgins come visit Juliet or a cousin, kind of play homage to the original Higgins. Otherwise the show is spot on.
