MasterChef August 31, 2022 Eliminated Derrick, Amanda & Willie (Recap)

Hey, “MasterChef” fans. Tonight, August 31, 2022, another two, new episodes for MasterChef’s current season 12 did indeed air with judges: Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez, and Joe Bastianich, and we saw three more contestants get eliminated when they were all over with.

The first episode kicked off with the teams learning they had to compete in the wall challenge. The wall challenge paired them up into teams of two, and they had to create the same identical dish without seeing each other. All they could do is yell to each other from across a wall to let the other person know what the heck they were doing.

Since Emily won the last challenge, she was given an advantage of picking who the teams would be. She paired herself up with Michael. Dara with Shanika. Christian with Willie and Amanda with Derrick. They were given 60 minutes to complete this challenge. This was a double elimination challenge that sent the losing team home. They were given an initial 5 minutes to gather up all of their ingredients.

Michael and Emily started running into problems earlier on. Michael had a lot of problems hearing Emily. He kept saying, “What” everytime Emily tried to tell him something.

Emily told Gordon that she and Michael are making a salmon dish. He wished them good luck.

Shanika told Joe and Aaron they were making a trout dish. Shanika told them, “I feel good with Dara.” Aaron said, “I like the communication between you two. Good luck.”

Derrick told Gordon that he and Amanda were making a sliced duck dish. He wished them good luck.

Christian told Aaron and Joe that he and Willie are making a pork chop dish. Christian said, “I’m happy with Willie. We’re not going home tonight.” They demonstrated they were definitely on the same page with the seasoning on the pork chops.

At one point, the judges mentioned that Derrick and Amanda should not be slicing the duck at 15 minutes left to go. They said it will lose all its oxidation. “No, no, no,” Gordon said.

The judges also mentioned that Emily and Michael had remarkable consistency, and they looked like they were cooking side by side.

When the time finally ran out, Shanika mentioned that she didn’t think her and Dara’s dish would be identical. “I think I messed up on the plating,” she said.

Next, it was time for the teams to present their dishes to the judges. Christian and Willie presented a Cajun Blackened Pork Chop with Blood Orange White Wine Sauce, Buttery Creamy Potato and Swiss Chard dish. Gordon said, “They are exact replicas. Christian’s pork chop is cooked beautifully. Willie’s pork chop was cooked about 60 seconds too long.” Aaron said, “You did a great job on the replication. Willie cooked his pork chop a bit too long, but good job.”

Dara and Shanika presented a Blackened Trout with Salsa Verde, Roasted Corn and Sautéed Mushrooms dish. Gordon said, “They look very similar. However, it’s not Michelin level.” Joe said, “The duplication in flavor is amazing, but the seasoning is aggressive.” Gordon said, “The mushrooms were badly thrown in there. The cooking of the trout is spot on. I expected more from the both of you.”

Michael and Emily served up a Crispy Skin Salmon with English Pea Puree, White Asparagus and Preserved Lemon Vinaigrette dish. Gordon said, “It looks beautiful. It’s similar in taste. Emily’s salmon is cooked perfectly. Michael, yours is a little rare.” Aaron said, “The vinaigrette is a mismatch.” Joe mentioned that they failed on one of the aspects of the dish.

Amanda and Derrick presented a Crispy Skin Duck with Moroccan-Style Couscous, Romanesco and Blood Orange Gastrique dish. Gordon said, “This is the wrong color of sauce. It looks like the duck is bleeding.” Aaron said, “You did a good job making them look similar. Amanda’s duck is well seasoned. Derrick’s duck is not seasoned at all.” Joe said,”The conceptualization of this dish is bad.” Gordon said, “It looks like this dish was put together in a rush instead of restaurant quality.”

After all of that, the judges decided that Christian and Willie had the best dish. Emily and Michael were also safe.

The bottom two dishes belonged to Derrick & Amanda and Shanika & Dara, but the judges thought Derrick and Amanda had the worst dish. So, they were both eliminated. Gordon told them, “Your dish wasn’t an idea that displayed confidence. Tonight, you were taken out by the dish.”

Amanda said,”My journey is over too soon once again.” Derrick said, “This was not how this was supposed to go. The challenge beat us. I’m disappointed because I had so much more to show, but I’m not going to give up.”

In the second episode, the remaining contestants went to Spago Restaurant, which is owned by chef Wolfgang Puck, and he was there. He showed them what dishes they needed to make in this next challenge. The dishes featured were appetizer Crispy Scale Bass with Glazed Daikon, Bok Choy and Grilled Mushroom Dashi.

After that, he demonstrated cooking Pan Roasted Scallops with Celery Root Puree, Caramelized Pears and Port Brown Butter Sauce. Lastly, Wolfgang cooked up the entrees, which were: Duck Breast with Smoked Parsnips and Maitake Mushrooms or Pan Seared Veal Chop with Shelling Beans, Black Garlic and Veal Jus.

Since Christian and Willie won the last challenge, they were made captains of the two teams. Christian, Emily and Dara made up the red team. Willie, Michael and Shanika made up the blue team. Someone from the losing team got sent packing. They had to cook for the restaurant’s customers that night.

During the night/challenge, Gordon called out the red team for serving up an ice cold sea bass at one point. Dara confessed that it was her fault. Gordon called out Michael for serving up a cold scallop. He yelled at Michael saying, “What are you trying to do? Close down Spago?!”

Willie swapped with Shanika to make sure the scallops were cooked properly. Michael told the private cams, “Willie isn’t being vocal. I can hear Christian more than Willie.” Gordon told Willie, “You’re being too quiet, and your standards are too low. Get your sh#%t together quickly!” After that, Willie made some adjustments to his team. Then, they started working on the entrees.

At one point, the blue team served up a raw veal to Wolfgang. Michael said he was the one that cooked it, and he had to cook another one. Wolfgang said the second one was perfect.

The red team also served up a raw veal, but Gordon caught it before it went out to Wolfgang, and he yelled at them to correct it. Dara complained that Christian seemed rattled by the raw veal and wasn’t getting the meat ready when she needed them. “I need Christian to pull it together,” Dara said.

Christian told the private cams, “This has been the hardest challenge yet. I’m really feeling the pressure. I’m very impressed by how Dara has kept her composure.”

At one pint, one of the blue team’s duck was sent back raw by a customer. Gordon kept complaining that the Blue team is too slow with their cooking speed.

After everything was complete, it was revealed that the red team were the winners of this challenge. That means someone from the blue team had to go, and the judges decided to eliminate Willie. Aaron told Willie, “I think this was just something that was a little over your head tonight.” Willie said, “I’m emotional ,right now, because I didn’t lead my team the way I needed to. I let them down, but this is not the last of Willie.”

Amanda needed to apologize to Derrick. She complained about his ego before the challenge. Derrick let her take the lead – and she screwed them both.
