New Catching Fire Movie Getting Very Good Reviews From Top Movie Critics

New Catching Fire movie getting very good reviews from top movie critics. Lionsgate finally released their new action/drama flick “Catching Fire” into theaters this weekend, and the official movie reviews from the top critics have arrived from Metacritic.com. As expected, the opinions are pretty damn good across the board, getting an overall 75 score from 44 critics. We’ve posted snippets from a few of them, below.

The film stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Woody Harrelson, Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amanda Plummer, Lynn Cohen, Patrick St. Esprit, Meta Golding, Bruno Gunn, Alan Ritchson, E. Roger Mitchell, Maria Howell, Stephanie Leigh Schlund, and Sam Claflin.

Ty Burr from the Boston Globe, gave it an awesome 88 out of 100 score, stating , ” Very few people will take in this spectacle of a society amusing itself to death, of “reality games” and the vapid media hysteria that surrounds them, and not draw a parallel to our own televised bread and circuses. At its best, “Catching Fire” is a blockbuster that bites the culture that made it.”

Peter Travers over at Rolling Stone, gave it another 88 score, stating, ” Pop-culture escapism can be thrilling when dished out by experts. Katniss is a character worth a handful of sequels. And Lawrence lights up the screen. You’ll follow her anywhere.”

Richard Roeper over at the Chicago Sun-Times, dropped another awesome 88 score for it,simply stating, “Catching Fire makes only the occasional misstep.” Kenneth Turan at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a good 80 score. He said, “An effective piece of melodramatic popular entertainment that savvily builds on the foundation established by the first Hunger Games movie.”

Joe Neumaier from the New York Daily News, gave it a great 80 score. He said, “The good news is it comes very close, and does it without sacrificing its soul. Despite its sense of been-here-slayed-that, director Francis Lawrence expertly delivers thrills, ideas and spectacle.”

Peter Debruge from Variety, gave it an 80 score, saying, “Francis Lawrence and his team have calibrated the entire experience for maximum engagement. And while its pleasures can’t touch the thrill of seeing the Death Star destroyed — not yet, at least — the film runs circles around George Lucas’ ability to weave complex political ideas into the very fabric of B-movie excitement.”

Owen Gleiberman from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 75 score, stating, “Catching Fire is smoothly exciting but a bit of a tease.” Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune awarded it a 75 score, explaining, “Catching Fire has the bonus of a genuinely charismatic performer at its center. Jennifer Lawrence, now an Oscar winner thanks to “Silver Linings Playbook,” emotes like crazy throughout “Catching Fire,” but you never catch her acting.”

Sara Stewart from the New York Post, gave it a 75 score. She stated, “Yes, it’s the middle chapter and feels like it, but it’s never dull.” Manohla Dargis over at the The New York Times, gave it a 70 score, stating, “Catching Fire isn’t a great work of art but it’s a competent, at times exciting movie and it does something that better, more artistically notable movies often fail to do: It speaks to its moment in time.”

Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 70 score. He said, “This is a safe, serviceable, carefully crafted action drama in which the subversive seeds planted in the first story take welcome root.” Finally, USA Claudia Puig at USA Today, gave it a 63 score, stating, that it was “Crowd-pleasing and compelling, most of all because of its fiery, charismatic heroine.” So overall, it sounds great.
