We were able to get a hold of a couple of new, official teaser descriptions for this January 22, 2023 installment from CBS’ official, January 22, 2023 episode press release. So, we’re going to definitely dive into it for this preview session. Let’s go.

The first description reveals that the 60 Minutes crew is going to take a look at CARNEGIE HEROES. These are people who have accomplished some very heroic and live-saving tasks despite the danger it put their lives in. They’re also going to explore such questions like: do heroes learn to be heroes, or are they just born that way? Correspondent and anchor Scott Pelley will be handling this segment.

CBS’ official description for this Carnegie Heroes segment reads like this, “CARNEGIE HEROES are people rewarded for heroic, life-saving acts performed despite the danger to themselves, by a 118-year-old foundation endowed by the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. But are heroes made or born?”

The second description reveals that 60 Minutes will do a segment titled, “Ballet In Exile.” In it, correspondent Jon Wertheim is going to take an in-depth look at how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is developing on the most delicate of fronts, which is the world’s ballet stages.

They’re going to talk with a Russian dancer named Olga Smirnova. She’s one of the world’s leading ballerinas. She is totally against the invasion and has even gone to such lengths as fleeing Russia and leaving the famed Bolshoi company in protest. They’re also going to talk with a young Ukrainian dancer who was able to find safety in Amsterdam. Another Ukrainian dancer will be featured who has actually become a soldier!

CBS’ official description for this “Ballet In Exile” segment reads like this, “60 MINUTES pulls back the curtain and looks at how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is developing on the most delicate of fronts: the world’s ballet stages. Correspondent Jon Wertheim meets Russian dancer Olga Smirnova – one of the world’s leading ballerinas – who condemned the invasion, left Moscow’s famed Bolshoi company in protest and fled the country.

He sits down with a young Ukrainian dancer who’s found a safe haven in Amsterdam to continue her dreams, and the American who helped relocate her and more than a hundred other dancers from the country through the international ballet community. Wertheim also meets a Ukrainian dancer-turned-soldier as conflict rages at home.”

The last description for this new January 22, 2023 episode lets us know that the 60 Minutes team is going to do a segment titled, “Flying Blind.” In it, they will take an in-depth look at a 15 year old skier named Jacob Smith who actually skis blind!

Yeah, apparently, he went blind after having four major surgeries for a brain tumor when he was 8 years old. He skis Montana’s Big Couloir mountain with his memory of the mountain before he went blind along with his other senses. Sharyn Alfonsi will be the correspondent working this story.

CBS’ official description for this Flying Blind segment reads like this, “Even the most competitive skiers see Montana’s Big Couloir as among the most challenging runs in the country. But for Jacob Smith, who at 15 is the only blind competitive free rider in the country, it was an almost inconceivable feat.

After undergoing four major surgeries for a brain tumor starting when he was just 8 years old, Jacob did the legendary run three years ago. Sharyn Alfonsi profiles Smith, who competes for the Big Sky freeride team today, and skis by tapping into his other senses and his memory of the mountain before he went blind.”

They also put in an editor’s note for this episode that says these are previously broadcast segments. However, they’ve been updated for this particular episode.

Again, CBS’ 60 minutes is all-new tonight, January 22, 2023. It will hit the air at approximately 6 pm central standard time.
