MasterChef August 26 Eliminated Dave Patera (Recap)

Earlier tonight, FOX aired another new episode of MasterChef’s current season 16, and another unlucky contestant did meat the end of the road at the end of it. The judges: Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Tiffany Derry were on hand once again.

The remaining contestants learned that they had to do a Restaurant takeover team challenge. The judges picked the teams. The Blue team consisted of: Julia, Heidi and Jake. The Red team consisted of: Peter, Dave and Basia.

The teams got to pick their captains. The Blue team chose Jake to be their captain. The Red team chose Basia to be their captain. It was announced that the captain of the winning team would get the biggest advantage of this season for further motivation.

Gordon gave the instructions for this challenge. They had to prepare a dinner service for customers of the Cluny Bistro. This dinner consisted of two appetizers and two entrees.

The first appetizer was sautéed prawns with curried parsnip puree and smoked bacon lardon salad. The second appetizer was pan-seared branzino with sautéed scallops, mussels and bouillabaisse. The First entree was: pan-seared salmon with soubise creamed onion puree, sautéed escarole and sauce vierge. Second entree was: steak frites with bordelaise sauce, watercress salad and parmesan fries.

Gordon showed them how to prepare these dishes before the challenge got started. During the challenge, the teams decided who needed to work on what. Basia got chewed out for dressing the salad too early at one point. So, she was not off to a good start.

Gordon told the Red team that they needed to get more organized and improve their communications after the appetizers menu was served up.

Julia got chewed out for serving up raw salmon. She got called out twice for it. Gordon told her to stop rushing. She told the private cams, “It’s like I forgot how to cook. My hands are shaking.” The pressure was definitely getting to her.

Eventually, Gordon had to put Julia in time out. However, she said the time-out is exactly what she needed to get back on track. After that, she appeared to start cooking the salmon a lot better, and the Blue team seemed to find their stride, getting food out to the tables in a fluid manner.

However, things weren’t going very well for the Red team. Dave got griped at for serving raw salmon. Dave served up another batch of raw salmon that was burnt on the outside. Dave said, “Oh my gosh. This is such a disaster.” This really caused the Red team to fall severely far behind, and it never got better for them.

At one point, Gordon told the Blue team, “Great job. Clear down.” So, they appeared to really get things together in the end. Meanwhile, Gordon had to actually step in and cook the salmon himself for the Red team. He told captain Basia, “This is embarrassing.” After the service was over, Gordon told the Red team, “I am at a loss for words. You guys were not on the same page. Dave, you looked like you never cooked food before in your life.”

Dave told the private cams, “The chances for me going home are very real.” Basia told the private cams, “This was the hardest challenge ever. I take full responsibility for this since I was the captain.”

The Red team also got a lot of poor feedback from the customers. In the end, the judges announced that the Blue team won. Judge Tiffany told the Blue team, “The customers thought your salmon was perfect.” Jake was congratulated for being a good captain.

Basia told the private cams, “I feel embarrassed with this performance. I should go home.” Gordon told the Red team, “You had no sense of timing. No authority.” Joe told them, “If this was my restaurant, you’d be fired.” Ultimately, the judges decided to eliminate Dave. Gordon told him, “Tonight, just wasn’t your night.”

Dave told the private cams, “At this level, there’s no room for mistakes. This has been such an amazing journey. I feel like I’ve grown so much as a cook since I’ve been here. I look forward to continuing that journey.”
