MasterChef September 2 Eliminated Basia Newman & Julia Cili (Recap)

Earlier tonight, September 2, 2026, FOX aired another new episode Master Chef’s current season 16, and not one, but two unlucky contestants bit the dust by the time it ended. The judges: Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Tiffany Derry were all on hand once again.

Tonight’s installment kicked off with the remaining 5 contestants learning they had to do a keeping up with judge Gordon Ramsay cooking challenge. However, before they did that, they had to get through a keeping up with judge Tiffany Derry cooking challenge. They were given just 30 seconds to plate their dishes after Tiffany plated hers.

Since Jake won the last challenge, he was given an advantage, which allowed him to skip the keeping up with Tiffany challenge and go straight to the Gordon Challenge.

In the Tiffany Derry challenge, she made a pan-roasted halibut, red chermoula, fonio, fennel, orange salad, and garlic sauce dish.

During the challenge, Basia told the private cams that she did something wrong with one of the ingredients, and she started to fall behind by 3 or 4 steps. Gordon said, “Basia is all over the place.”

Julia ran into problems with her fish cooking too hot at one point. Heidi told the private cams that she seemed very prepared for this challenge. Peter ran into issues with the plating of the food. Julia said, “I messed up with the sear on my fish. I hope I don’t go home.”

Peter presented his dish to the judges. Tiffany said, “The fish is cooked nicely.” Gordon said, “The fish is cooked beautifully.” Joe said, “Nice work.”

Julia presented her dish. Tiffany said, “It tastes better than it looks. It’s nicely cooked.” Gordon said, “Its cooked beautifully, but it looks clumsy.” Joe said, “I wish the aesthetics were better.”

Heidi presented her dish. Tiffany said, “Visually, looks good. It’s nicely cooked. It has great flavor. Nice job.” Gordon said, “Really good job. Well done.” Joe said, “I complement you for this.”

Basia presented her dish. Tiffany said, “It’s a little clunky. The fish is undercooked. The red chermoula is nice.” Gordon said, “The ratios are wrong.” Joe said, “It has a lack of organization.” After all of that, the judges said Basia had the worst dish. Gordon told her, “The main protein was undercooked.”

Basia told the private cams, “It is very hard to leave, but I’ve learned to believe in myself even more. I’m looking to start a restaurant in Jersey.”

Next, the remaining four contestants did the Keeping Up with Gordon challenge. For it, he made an herb-crusted rack of lamb with roasted eggplant puree, pea fricassee, pickled turnips and mint sauce dish. Gordon only gave them 15 seconds to plate their food after he was done plating his, making it even tougher.

During the challenge, Peter immediately ran into trouble with keeping up. Joe said,”Peter is a little bit behind.” Julia fell behind with the herb crust. Jake told the private cams that he was worried his lamb was undercooked. So, he stuck it back in the oven for another minute.

Julia told the private cams that her lamb wasn’t cooked right during the plating. “I think it’s a little undercooked,” she said.

Peter presented his dish to the judges. Gordon said, “The lamb is cooked beautifully. It was a really good effort.” Joe said, “The flavor was not bad.”

Julia presented her dish. Gordon said, “The lamb is undercooked. The eggplant puree is beautiful.” Tiffany said, “I liked your spices.” Joe said, “The lamb is a bit undercooked. Everything else is nice.”

Heidi presented her dish. Gordon said, “Visually, it looks good, but it’s missing the sauce. The lamb tastes delicious, but it needed the sauce.” Tiffany said, “You did a lot of things really well.” Joe said, “It’s quite excellent.”

Jake presented his dish. Gordon said, “The lamb is cooked beautifully, but the plating was bad.” Tiffany said, “Your flavors are really nice.” Joe said, “This has punchy flavors. Good job.”

After all of that, the judges said Heidi had the best dish. Then, they said Julia had the worst dish. So, she was sadly eliminated. Gordon told her,”The biggest issue was the undercooked lamb.”

Julia told the private cams, “I wanna thank MasterChef for giving me the confidence and courage to pursue my dreams.”
