MasterChef August 30, 2023 Eliminated Lizzie Hartman & James Barfield (Recap)
Hey, “MasterChef” fans. Tonight, August 30, 2023, another 2, new episodes of MasterChef’s current season 13 did indeed hit the air with judges: Joe Bastianich, Gordon Ramsay, and Aarón Sánchez, and we saw two more contestants get sent packing at the end of them.
The first episode kicked off with the contestants learning that they had to do a new Mystery box challenge. Their boxes contained different kinds of fish. Sav and MD were safe from elimination, and they got to make certain contestants swap their fish. MD made Grant switch his fish out with James’ fish. Sav made Kennedy switch out her salmon fish with Reagan’s sardine fish. The contestants had 60 minutes to make their dish.
During this challenge, it was revealed that Reagan is allergic to fish, which made this an even tougher challenge for her because she couldn’t taste test her dish before serving it up to the judges. Joe and Aaron gave her some advice to help her tell if she’s overcooked the fish without tasting it.
The judges mentioned that Grant’s dish might be a little bit too ambitious. Lizzie said she was a little embarrassed by her dish when the time was up. She said, “I don’t have the right elements, and I’m worried.” When the time was up, the judges took a look at all the dishes, and decided that the top 3 dishes belonged to: Wayne, Kolby and Kennedy.
Wayne presented a Blackened Catfish with Spicy Potato Hash, Remoulade, and Pickled Green Tomatoes dish. Joe said, “It looks appetizing. It’s very smart. The fish was cooked to perfection.” Aaron said, “It’s balanced and beautiful.” Gordon said, “You nailed the catfish. Really good job.”
Kolby presented a Harissa Spiced Halibut with Squash & Carrot Puree and Tabouleh dish. Joe said, “It’s well seasoned. The fish was properly cooked.” Aaron said, “This is a very intelligent dish.” Gordon said, “It’s good. It’s one of your best dishes so far.”
Kennedy presented a Fried Sardines with Herb Panzanella and White Wine & Raisin Sauce dish. Joe said, “This is the kind of food I like to eat. Everything is right and delicious.” Aaron said, “Great flavor.” Gordon said, “It’s just delicious. Great job. Well done.”
After all of that, the judges decided that Wayne had the best dish. So, he won immunity for the next challenge.
Next, the judges decided that the worst dishes belonged to: Grant, Lizzie and James. Grant was up first with his Pan Seared Mackerel with Sautéed Kohlrabi and Mackerel Mousse & Potato Soufflé dish. Joe said, “You’re a way better cook than this dish. It’s bad.” Aaron said, “This dish is just difficult to understand. It’s just a misfire.” Gordon said, “This is two dishes coming into one. It didn’t quite hit the mark.”
Lizzie presented a Pan Seared Red Snapper with Orange & Saffron Sauce, Couscous, Charred Bok Choy and Orange Supremes dish. Gordon said, “It looks unfinished.” Joe said, “The couscous just taste like mimosa. There’s nothing going on here.” Aaron said, “There’s no creativity or imagination here.” Gordon said, “This dish might send you home.”
James presented a Pan Seared Striped Sea Bass with Pickled Romanesco, Parsnip Puree, Sautéed Mushrooms and Roasted Tomatoes dish. Joe said, “The fish is overcooked. The rest of the ingredients are miscooked.” Gordon and Aaron said, “You put ingredients in here that have nothing to do with fish.”
After all of that, the judges decided that James had the worst dish. So, poor James Barfield was eliminated in this episode. Gordon told him, “Watching you evolve was great for us three.” James told the private cams, “I almost made the top 10, but I still have a lot to be proud of. I will keep trying to improve.”
In the second hour, season 11 winner Kelsey Murphy returned to do some guest judging with Gordon, Aaron and Joe. The contestants learned that they had to make stadium food dishes with some elevation added to them. Wayne was safe from elimination for this challenge, and he was able to give a 5-minute time out to one of the contestants as an advantage. He ended up giving it to Jennifer at about 10 minutes into the challenge. So, she had to work double time to catch up with cooking her pork.
During this challenge, the judges said they were worried about Jennifer not having enough time to complete her dish. They also thought Lizzie’s dish was bizarre. They also weren’t too fond of MD’s donuts dish. They thought Kolby’s patty melt dish might not be elevated enough.
Kolby said his dish is not coming out the way he wanted it to with less than 15 minutes to go. Joe thought Grant might be trying to do too much again. Lizzie said her dish is not working with just seconds to go. Kolby said, “I’m so disappointed in myself” after time was up.
At this point, the judges took a look at all the dishes and decided that the top dishes belonged to: MD, Brynn and Jennifer. MD was up first with her Mixed Berry Cake Donut Trio with Fresh Rosemary, Fruity Cereal and Edible Flowers dish. Gordon said, “This dish has great technical flare.” Kelsey said, “I love these. They are very elevated.” Aaron said, “I love this.” Joe said, “This is a very professional creation.”
Brynn presented a Lobster Roll with Tempura Battered Lobster Claw, Sweet Potato Chips and Celery Slaw dish. Kelsey said, “This is really good. Excellent.” Joe said, “This dish was executed to perfection.” Aaron said, “It has really interesting spices.” Gordon said, “This is flawless. It’s probably your best dish so far. Good job.”
Jennifer presented a Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich with Blackberry BBQ Sauce and Tangy Slaw dish. Gordon said, “It’s delicious. I love it. It’s a very tasty dish.” Kelsey said, “You nailed it.” Aaron said, “This is impressive.” Joe said, “Good job.”
After all of that, the judges decided that Brynn had the best dish. So, she won immunity for the next challenge.
Next, the judges decided that the worst dishes belonged to: Kolby, Grant and Lizzie. Kolby was up first with his Texas Style Patty Melt with Coleslaw and French Fries dish. Joe said, “Everything looks wrong. The burger actually tastes good.” Kelsey said, “This actually tastes better than it looks.” Gordon said, “This was one of your worst performances.”
Grant presented a Pulled Pork Stuffed Tetelas with Red & Green Salsa and Queso Blanco dish. Joe said, “These are totally raw.” Aaron said, “This is all kinds of messed up.” Gordon said, “The masa is raw. It’s too bad because the pork was delicious.”
Lizzie presented a King Crab Hushpuppies with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce and Sweet Potato Chips dish. Joe said, “This is raw. We can’t even eat this.” Kelsey said,”It’s dense.” Joe said,”It’s overcooked on the outside and undercooked on the inside.” Gordon said, “Nothing was elevated here.”
After all of that, the judges decided that Lizzie had the worst dish. So, poor Lizzie Hartman was eliminated in this episode. Gordon told Lizzie,”Unfortunately, the cook on the hushpuppies missed the mark.” Lizzie told the private cams,”I’m sad that my MasterChef journey is over, but I’m so proud to make it to the top 10. This experience has truly changed my life. I will never forget it.”
