‘So You Think You Can Dance’ June 3, 2019 Auditions Revealed (Premiere Episode 1 Recap)
Hey, “So You Think You Can Dance” fans. Tonight, June 3, 2019, the premiere episode 1 of this current season 16 did indeed air. As most of you know, the premiere episode is just filled with auditions. This season was no different.
The judges for this season were revealed to be: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Laurieann Gibson and Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval. Laurieann and Dominic replaced Vanessa and Twitch from last season.
Tonight’s premiere episode kicked off with with a hip hop audition from a female named Dezi Saenz. She ended up doing lots of popping, locking and animation. Afterwards, Nigel said it was tremendous. Laurieann said, “It was the definition of the natural born gift.”
Dominic said, ” I enjoyed how much work you put in for the audition.” Mary said, “You took it to another level.” Dezi received 4 yeses from the judges. So, she’s moving on to the next round.
Next up, Stephanie Sosa and her brother Ezra Sosa hit the stage to perform a Jive routine. Apparently, Stephanie was on the show last season. So, she was a returning dancer.
After their performance, Mary said, “Samantha went from an emotional start into a beast.” Nigel said, “I loved Ezra’s legs. It was very sharp.” Laurieann said, “It was spectacular.” Dominic said, “I loved it all from beginning to end.” They both got all yeses from the judges.
After that, a contemporary dancer named Matthew Deloch hit the stage. He was another returning dancer. He was on the show during season 14. He didn’t return in season 15 due to an injury.
After performing his routine, Dominic said, “It was amazing, and you have an impact without even moving.” Nigel said, “Your technique is superb.” Laurieann said, “It was wonderful. The stage was just set on fire.” He also received 4 yeses.
Next up, was Sarah McCreanor. She goes by the nickname “Smac.” She’s a jazz dancer from Australia. After her routine, Dominic told Sarah,”You are brilliant with your craft.” Mary said, “I loved the professional timing. You’re the Lucy Ball of dancing.” Nigel said, “It was fantastic, and you’re a star.” Laurieann said, “You’re a natural born entertainer.” Sarah also got 4 yeses from the judges.
From there, Amanda Butler hit the stage. She’s a hip hop dancer. She arrived on stage with a backup crew of women. However, she was just performing for herself. So, that was odd.
After her performance, Laurieann said, “You’re inspiring, but some of the others pulled focus.” Dominic said, “The group’s performance was good but not so much Amanda alone.” Mary said, “You need more work.” Laurieann and Dominic gave her a yes, but it was a no from Nigel and Mary. Since she needed 3 yeses, she was not allowed to move forward.
After all of that, a contemporary dancer named Gino Cosculluela hit the stage. It was revealed that he was actually on “Dance Moms” when he was nine years old.
After his routine, Nigel told Gino, ” I will be shocked if you’re not in the top ten this year.” Laurieann said, “When you came out of the step and was still, that’s when I saw the dancer.” Dominic said, “I was blown away by all of it.” Mary said, “It had everything.” Gino got 4 yeses from the judges.
So, that was it for the premiere episode 1 of “So You Think You Can Dance” season 16. Most everyone went through to the next round. We’ll see what happens in the next episode 2. it’s scheduled to air next Monday night, June 10, 2019 at 8 pm central standard time on FOX.
