Matlock New Season 3 Is Happening. CBS Renewed It
Tonight, April 23, 2026, CBS is airing the finale episodes 15 and 16 of Matlock’s current season 2. That means that after tonight, there will be no more new episodes for a while, but not forever because we can officially confirm with you guys that CBS did renew the show for a brand new season 3.
New episodes will be on their way. However, you’re going to have to wait a little longer to see them according to a recent report from Entertainment Weekly.
It’s telling us that the new season 3 of Matlock is not going to debut until early 2027 instead of the Fall of 2026. Apparently, Matlock’s showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman personally made this request to be moved to the midseason because she and her staff need more time to write out a proper plotline for the series because they don’t want to keep rehashing the same old storylines for the characters.
She stated, “I asked for it with the network. We had a talk. I just feel like we had so much stuff to think about because we really landed the plane on this and we really thought that was important because we didn’t want to keep dragging out the same story and the characters have to get to some place real emotionally.
When we took this two-hour finale and really paid a lot of things off, what came with that was I’m going to need time after that to really build the architecture so that we have it for the next seasons. I’m excited about it, but I am also grateful because we needed a little bit of time.
It will be sad for audiences, but actually really good for me and the writers because I want us to plot this new mystery and make sure it’s airtight. We had a lot of pieces going in, so we really had to create this new piece of it. I feel lucky that the network’s giving us time to get it right because I don’t want the quality to drop.
It’s a big reset. So, we have an extra long writer’s room before we go to camera, and I really want to do it right. The quality is everything to me.”
Currently, it is not yet known just how many episodes season 3 will have. We’ll have to reveal that information at a later date.
Again, Matlock has been officially renewed for a new season 3 by CBS, and it will premiere sometime in early 2027 due to the showrunner’s request.
