New Run All Night Movie Received Mixed Reviews From Major Critics
Warner Bros. Pictures released their new hardcore action movie, “Run All Night,” into theaters this weekend, and all the big reviews have come in from the top,major movie critics. It turns out that they were pretty mixed in their overall assessment as it got an overall 59 score out of a possible 100 across 33 reviews at the Metacritic.com site.
The film stars: Liam Neeson, Nick Nolte, Ed Harris, Vincent D’Onofrio, Joel Kinnaman, Patricia Kalember, Genesis Rodriguez and Boyd Holbrook. We’ve added blurbs from a few of the critics,below.
Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a great 88 score, saying: “Even though it feels as if we’ve seen this movie before, Run All Night is a stylish and kinetic thriller, with Neeson at his gritty, world-weary best, some of the coolest camera moves in recent memory and a Hall of Fame villain in the great Ed Harris.”
Kenneth Turan over at the Los Angeles Times, gave it an 80 grade, stating: “Rife with familiar elements given something of a different spin, Run All Night manages to leave you out of breath but hungry for more.”
Mick LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a decent 75 score. He said: “After devising a sturdy frame for Neeson’s special brand of sorrowful mayhem, the filmmakers expertly fill in Run All Night with a series of charged action scenes, including a rare one in which Neeson chases after a cop car, instead of the other way around.”
Brian Tallerico over at RogerEbert.com, gave it a 75 grade, stating: “Run All Night is proof that quality action films don’t really need to reinvent the wheel each time out as long as they make it spin this smoothly.”
Alonso Duralde from TheWrap, gave it a 75 grade, claiming: “There’s not much new in this tale of grim men staring, and then shooting, each other down, but this cast and crew know how to spin this yarn with efficacy and economy.”
Andy Webster over at The New York Times, gave it a 70 score,saying: “The movie, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed Mr. Neeson in the efficient airborne thriller “Non-Stop,” has two saving graces: a tight script and terrific acting.”
Justin Chang at Variety, gave it a 70 score. He stated: “Even when he’s dealing with this boilerplate material, Collet-Serra brings an understated intensity and a subtle emotional pull to every scene, aided immeasurably by actors who invest their roles, big and small, with just the right degree of conviction.”
Kyle Anderson from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 67 grade, stating: “Unfortunately, Run All Night gets a little slack with its third act and runs out of steam by the time the final showdown arrives.”
Kyle Smith at the New York Post, gave it a 63 score, stating: “Run All Night is routine in its contours, occasionally sloppy in its editing and filled with the usual implausibilities.”
Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune, gave it a 63 grade. He said: “Directed, frantically, by Jaume Collet-Serra, written by Brad Ingelsby, Run All Night promises a sprint punctuated by a lot of gunfire, and bleeding, and bodies. Mission accomplished.”
Michael O’Sullivan from the Washington Post, gave it a 50 grade, saying: ” Despite some cool camera work and the kind of noir-lite moral ambiguity that barely gets your shoes dirty (courtesy of a shallow script by Brad “Out of the Furnace” Ingelsby), the movie is the cinematic equivalent of junk food. It satisfies the craving for the sensation of nihilism, without its substance.”
Claudia Puig from USA Today, gave it a 50 score, saying: “These movies can’t possibly be the best chance Neeson has got. Certainly he’s offered more nuanced dramas that call on subtler acting skills and don’t entail a mounting body count.”
Tom Russo at the Boston Globe , gave it a 50 grade. He stated: “The story loses its convincingly scaled sense of jeopardy in the late going, and it ultimately unravels.”
Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 40 grade, stating: “The story keeps everyone in motion all night long, and frantically so, to the point that it could easily have been titled Non-Stop 2.”
