In tonight’s new, October 13, 2023 episode 3, the 20/20 team will take a deep look at a story about an 11-year old kid named Jacob Wetterling. The year was 1989 when he was out and about, riding a bike with his brother and best friend. Then, all of a sudden, a masked armed man came out of nowhere to abruptly abduct him when he was just a half of a mile away from his house!

The 20/20 team is going to feature new details about the investigation of this kidnapping, which actually led to a startling confession that happened almost 27 years after Jacob was abducted.

This episode will feature interviews with: Wetterling’s parents, Patty and Jerry Wetterling; Wetterling’s friends, one of whom witnessed the kidnapping; and blogger Joy Baker, whose work with the family helped push for a fresh review of the entire case. Additionally, “20/20” has interviews with investigators and prosecutors who were steadfast on finding Jacob and providing answers to the family.

This episode also explores the ripple effects of Wetterling’s abduction on the tight-knit community and the broader issue of child safety as Wetterling’s mother transformed her grief into a lifelong commitment to the cause of missing children. Patty Wetterling also shares intimate details of her unwavering quest to find her missing son as described in her book, “Dear Jacob: A Mother’s Journey of Hope.”
