Magnum PI Season 5 January 3, 2024 Episodes 19 & 20 Are The Finale. Season 6 Not Happening
Hey, “Magnum P.I.” fans. We hope you guys totally enjoyed episodes 19 and 20 tonight, especially since they were indeed the very last episodes of Magnum PI’s current season 5, and unfortunately, we’ve gotten official word that NBC did in fact cancel Magnum PI. So, season 5 is also the final season unless it somehow gets saved again by another network.
According to the folks over at Screenrant.com , NBC made the official announcement to cancel Magnum PI way back in June of 2023. Screenrant gave some possible reasons for the cancellation.
Apparently, the cast’s contracts were up for negotiation for a new season 6. So, NBC had to either extend the cast’s contracts, order more episodes, or just cancel the show. At the time, there was a lot of uncertainty because of the writers strike, which had been going on for a full month and a half. So, NBC felt their best option was to just cancel the show.
According to the LIVE Nielsen ratings, Magnum PI season 5 averaged 3.352 million LIVE viewers, and a 0.27 ratings score for the 18-49 year old demographics. The most recent episode 18, which aired back on December 13, 2023, managed to draw in 2.932 million LIVE viewers, and a 0.21 ratings score.
The most-viewed episode was the premiere episode 1 with 3.874 million LIVE viewers. The least-viewed episode was episode 7 with 2.727 million LIVE viewers. The highest-rated episode was the premiere episode 1 with a 0.36 ratings score. The lowest-rated episode was episode 9 with a 0.20 ratings score.
Those numbers could be another reason why NBC wasn’t really interested in keeping the show going. The viewership and ratings numbers did take a tumble after moving over to NBC from CBS. It averaged closer to 5 million LIVE viewers per episode over on CBS. Oh, well. R.I.P. Magnum PI for now at least.
