‘The Rookie’ Season 2, May 10, 2020 Episode 20 Is The Finale. Season 3 Renewal Is Not Confirmed
Hey, “The Rookie” fans. Today, is the day. The very last episode of “The Rookie” season 2 is going to air, and that will be it for new episodes for a while if we’re assuming the show will get renewed for a brand new season 3.
I wish we could do more than assume right now, but that is the case because ABC has not yet served up an official announcement for the renewal of The Rookie for a brand new season 3. The folks over at TV Line have a very optimistic outlook for the show’s future.
On their renewal scorecard, they think that it’s a safe bet that ABC will indeed renew The Rookie for a new season 3.
We took a look at the ratings and LIVE viewership numbers for season 3, and here’s what we discovered. It averaged 4.303 million LIVE viewers per episode, and a 0.64 ratings score for the 18-49 year old demographics.
The last episode 19, which aired on May 3, 2020 brought in 4.995 million LIVE viewers and 0.68 ratings score.
Throughout this season, the LIVE viewership numbers fluctuated down to as low as 3.243 million LIVE viewers and as high as 5.867 million LIVE viewers. That 5.867 million viewers showed up for the 16th episode. It aired on April 5, 2020. Apparently, a lot more people were looking forward to that particular episode.
Overall, we can see how TV Line thinks it’s a safe bet that ABC will renew The Rookie for a new season 3, but it will depend on if ABC is actually making enough money from the show ,and only ABC’s finance department knows that information.
Many things other than the LIVE ratings and viewership numbers can determine if the network is actually making money off a particular show or not. Some of those things include how much the network has to actually pay for the show, the actors and so on and so forth. All of that falls into the actual cost to produce the show.
That’s why sometimes you see the networks ordering less episodes of a particular show. The more episodes the network purchases, the more it costs them. Sometimes, they want to keep a show on their network, but just not pay the higher costs of a full season.
So, sometimes they’ll order a half season. Maybe a little over a half a season. We’ve also seen this scenario. They’ll order a half season, and then come back later and purchase a full season before that particular season is over because the show is performing very well for them financially.
Then sometimes you see where the network outright orders two or three seasons of a particular show in advance because they’re just so confident in that show’s performance that they have no doubts they must keep it for many more seasons.
On the worst end of that, we’ve seen where the network has jumped in an canceled a show before the ordered season is even over because it performs so badly the network just can’t afford to keep running it.
Hopefully, for The Rookie, ABC likes what they got from its second season. If they do, we should see an official season 3 announcement pretty soon. Cross your fingers. We’ll certainly update this post if they do.
Again, the new finale episode 21 of The Rookie’s second season is scheduled to air tonight, May 10, 2020 at approximately at 9 pm central standard time on ABC, of course.
