New The Wedding Ringer Movie Received Mostly Negative Reviews From Major Critics
Screen Gems (Sony) released their new comedy flick, “The Wedding Ringer,” into theaters today, and all the reviews are in from the top,major movie critics. It turns out that the majority of them didn’t like it too much, giving it an overall 32 score out of a possible 100 across 20 reviews at the Metacritc.com site.
The movie stars: Cloris Leachman, Jenifer Lewis, Kevin Hart, Olivia Thirlby, Mimi Rogers, Josh Gad, Ken Howard and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting. We’ve added blurbs from a couple of the critics,below.
Michael Ordona at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 75 score, saying: “Respect is not something viewers will find much of in The Wedding Ringer, nor propriety, nor any of those things that make for respectable family viewing. It’s just a funny, impolite, very not-for-kids romp that goes there.”
Alonso Duralde from TheWrap, gave it a 53 score,stating: “While The Wedding Ringer isn’t the total waste of time that its painful trailer (and January release date) threatens, it’s also a movie whose occasional good ideas are ultimately drowned out by sloppy, contrived screenwriting.”
Christy Lemire over at RogerEbert.com, gave it a 50 grade, stating: “Vaguely more tolerable than you might expect – enjoyable, even, in sporadic bursts.”
Joe Neumaier at the New York Daily News, gave it a 40 score, saying: “The manic energy of Kevin Hart is, surprisingly, toned down in The Wedding Ringer. Which may account for almost the entire first half of this wannabe-raucous buddy movie being laugh-free.”
Bestsy Sharkey at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a 40 score. She said: ” It’s not quite a match made in heaven, but there is considerable comic chemistry between the high-octane Kevin Hart and the energy-conserving Josh Gad. A good thing since theirs is the only relationship worth watching in The Wedding Ringer.”
Justin Chang from Variety, gave it a 40 grade, saying: “A well-cast but clumsily assembled buddy-for-hire comedy that increasingly smacks of desperation as it approaches its big-day climax.”
Richard Roeper at the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a 38 score. He stated: “Despite the considerable charisma of Kevin Hart and Josh Gad and a strong supporting cast, The Wedding Ringer has only one or two genuinely inspired bits of comedy, a few dopey moments when you laugh in spite of yourself — and long, long stretches of pointless montages, loud and unfunny physical shtick and far too much reliance on gay “humor.”
Nicolas Rapold from The New York Times, gave it a 30 score. He stated: “Mr. Hart tells wild tales, Mr. Gad is humiliated, and most everyone else gets to dish out or receive abuse. But the laughs are not a sure thing.”
Jon Frosch at The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 30 score. He said: “A certain derivative, deja-vu quality isn’t the only sin this lazy, numbingly routine, very occasionally amusing comedy commits.”
Jason Clark from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 25 score, saying: “The Wedding Ringer is such a crudely edited, slapdash affair it often forgets about the characters it has introduced — especially the women.”
Sara Stewart over at the New York Post, gave it a very bad 25 grade. She said: “The Wedding Ringer is not so much a rom-com as an anatomy lesson. And the lesson is this: Men have balls. They must have them, or grow them, otherwise they are not men. They are little girls.”
