New The Gallows Movie Received Mostly Negative Reviews From Major Critics

Warner Bros. Pictures released their new horror/thriller film, “The Gallows,” into theaters today, July 10th, 2015, and all the top, major movie critics have turned in their reviews. It turns out that it didn’t quite resonate too well with them, getting only an overall 31 score out of a possible 100 score across 20 reviews at the metacritic.com site.

The film stars: Cassidy Gifford, David Herrera, Melissa Bratton, Pfeifer Brown, Price T. Morgan, Reese Mishler, Ryan Shoos, Theo Burkhardt and Travis Cluff. We’ve posted blurbs from a couple of the critics, below.

Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a decent 75 score, stating: ” This is the kind of movie where you can anticipate the next big shock and it usually arrives right on cue, and yet it still gets you right in the gut.”

Peter Keough over at the Boston Globe, gave it a 63 grade. He stated: “Occasionally the camera gets jumbled around, blacks out, and hisses with static as if it had been tossed in a dryer. Then it regains composure and reveals — an old playbill! A figure in a mask with a noose! The birth of a new franchise and the death of a great genre.”

Michael Phillips from the Chicago Tribune, gave it a 63 score. He said: “Lofing and Cluff certainly know the found-footage ropes, and the tropes; we’ll see if their next project reveals a little more imagination.”

Gary Goldstein over at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a 60 grade, saying: “Plot holes aside, the filmmakers provide enough well-timed jumps and energetic moments to keep the highly contained picture afloat.”

Mick LaSalle over at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 50 grade, stating: “A movie that has two good ideas. It needed three.”

Kyle Anderson over at Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 50 grade. He stated: “This is another found-footage movie that, with a little art direction and some actual cinematography, could easily have been a decent little terrorizer. Instead, it comes mostly unglued thanks to its hacky gimmick.”

Neil Genzlinger from The New York Times, gave it a 40 score, stating: “The horror movie The Gallows starts with a decent if improbable premise, and it ends with a pretty good jolt. But in between, the film sure wears out the already tired found-footage device.”

Stephen Farber over at The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 40 score, saying: “Any film that tries to revive this technique needs a clever story or unusual filmmaking ingenuity to stand out from the crowd. The Gallows has neither. It has enough mild scares to captivate the under-25 crowd.”

Tim Appelo from TheWrap, gave it a 35 score, stating: “The Gallows is not without thrills. What it lacks is the thrill of the chase.”

Geoff Berkshire over at Variety, gave it a 30 score, stating: “The Gallows isn’t without a certain amount of atmosphere, it simply feels borrowed wholesale. That would matter less with a better script, but the four main characters are paper-thin even by genre norms.”

Syephen Witty from the New York Daily News, gave it a 20 grade. He stated: ” Sorry, but this kind of high-school horror was old when Jamie Lee Curtis was young. All the ugly, shaky, night-vision camerawork in the world will not make it seem fresh. Or remotely scary.”

Finally, Lou Lumenick over at the New York Post, gave it a the most awful “0” score, claiming: “Even by the modest standards of the genre, the ending is jaw-droppingly ridiculous.” Stay tuned. Also, get your favorite Movie stuff, and more by Clicking Here.
