New Pan Movie Received Mostly Negative Reviews From Major Critics

Warner Bros. Pictures released their new fantasy/adventure movie, “Pan” into theaters this weekend, and all the major, top movie critics have turned in their reviews for it. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite resonate well with them, getting only an overall 34 score out of a possible 100 across 33 reviews at the Metacritic.com site.

The film stars: Garrett Hedlund, Hugh Jackman, Jimmy Vee, Levi Miller and Rooney Mara. We’ve posted comments from a couple of the critics, below.

Bill Zwecker over at the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it an ok 75 score, stating: “Full of non-stop action, an intriguing new take on J.M. Barrie’s classic “Peter Pan” tale and some old-fashioned, swashbuckling mischief led by Hugh Jackman, director Joe Wright’s Pan is one heck of a charming romp.”

Tom Russo from the Boston Globe, gave it a 63 grade. He stated: “Passable adventure that offers the occasional flash of real cleverness.”

Joe McGovern at Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 42 score, stating: “Hugh Jackman gives the movie a bit of twinkle as a pirate who breathes pixie dust to stay fresh and relevant. Maybe the people behind Pan should have snorted some.”

Peter Debruge from Variety, gave it a 40 grade, saying: “At no point in the entire film is any character allowed to have any fun at all, which is a rather devastating flaw for a movie that’s supposed to be set in an eternal wonderland of play and arrested childhood innocence.”

A.O. Scott over at The New York Times, gave it a 30 score, stating: “The dominant emotion in Pan is the desperation of the filmmakers, who frantically try to pander to a young audience they don’t seem to respect, understand or trust.”

Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 30 score. He stated: “What fun there is falls to Jackman, who gives the grand old man of pirate characters plenty of fresh and unusual wrinkles and emerges better than the others simply by virtue of playing a two-dimensional, rather than one-dimensional, figure.”

Peter Travers over at Rolling Stone, gave it a 25 grade. He said: “Joe Wright’s origin story of Peter and the lost boys has to be the dimmest, deadliest take ever on J.M. Barrie’s Pan myth.”

Mick LaSalle over at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 25 grade. He stated: “A complete washout, a joyless, pointless and fundamentally idiotic enterprise.”

Chicago Tribune’s Michael Phillips, gave it a 25 grade, stating: “The most joyless revisionism since Disney’s “The Lone Ranger.”

Susan Wloszczyna over at RogerEbert.com, gave it a 25 grade, stating: “To begin with, the very premise feels off. Peter Pan isn’t a superhero and doesn’t really need an origin story, especially one that opens at a London orphanage for boys during the Blitz and borrows heavily from the “Oliver Twist” handbook.”

Alonso Duralde from the TheWrap, gave it a 15 grade. He stated: “A thoroughly unpleasant experience.”

Finally, “Lou Lumenick” from the New York Post, gave it the worst possible “0” score, claiming: “This joyless, 10-megaton bomb fails in just about every imaginable way, as well as some you couldn’t possibly imagine.” Stay tuned. Also, get your favorite TV show stuff, and more by Clicking Here.
