Nine years ago, Mortimer “Mo” Silvertongue Folchart (Brendan Fraser) read a story called “Inkheart” to his daughter, Meggie Folchart (Eliza Bennett) along with his wife,Resa (Sienna Guillory) but not knowing of his secret ability at the time brought the storybook characters out of the book by reading it out loud. One problem was that some of the characters he brought out were evil. The second problem was that when he brings characters out of the book one person from the real world goes into the book. Unfortunately, that one person was his wife.
