New ‘Station 19’ Season 3 Is Happening. ABC Renewed It. Spoilers Coming Soon
Hey, “Station 19” fans. We’ve got some super terrific news for you guys in this article. We can officially tell you that ABC did indeed renew you favorite show for a brand new season 3. That’s right, guys. You can crack open those champagne bottle right now and celebrate.
Before you do though, we’ve recently learned there’s one, small caveat. It turns out that season 3 will not be debuting until the midseason. So, it’s probably not going premiere until early 2020.
Apparently, Station 19 lost it’s current showrunner and creator Stacy McKee to another job opportunity. So, Grey’s Anatomy’s current showrunner Krista Vernoff has been hired to step in to take Stacy’s place.
We’re not sure this is the absolute reason why season 3 is being pushed back to a midseason premiere, but it could be one of the reasons. According to the folks over at Popculture.com, ABC is going to debut a new drama series during the Fall 2019 called, “A million Little Things.” It will take Station 19’s spot until it returns during the midseason.
Karey Burke who is the president of ABC Entertainment told the press that Station 19’s season 3 pick-up will “bring plenty of crossover events with flagship series, Grey’s Anatomy, which just recently was renewed for Seasons 16 and 17 on ABC.”
Station19’s new showrunner Krista Vernoff added to that statement by saying, “I’m thrilled to continue at the helm of Grey’s Anatomy, and I’m honored and energized by the opportunity to run Station 19 as well. To expand upon the world Stacy McKee created, and further merge it with the world of Grey’s is an exciting challenge.”
According to Soapoperanetwork.com, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes said a few words about Station 19 and Krista taking over the showrunner duties for it.
She stated, “Everyone at Shondaland is thrilled that our fans’ commitment to TGIT continues. We are so proud of Krista and Pete and the work they do. Making the choice to have Krista oversee ‘Station 19’ was easy. The creativity she brings to the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe continues a tradition of storytelling we hold dear.”
Looking at the LIVE viewership and ratings numbers for Station 19, it’s not hard to see why ABC opted to renew it for a brand new season 3. Heck, it’s not far behind Grey’s Anatomy’s numbers, and it’s the number 3 show on the network.
Station 19 averaged 5.319 million viewers per episode during its current season 2 and a 0.96 ratings score for the 18 to 49 year old demographics. The season 2 premiere brought in 5.171 million viewers and a 1.08 ratings score. After that, the viewership numbers held very steady, jumping up to 6 million viewers in some of the episodes.
The most recent episode 16 that aired on May 9, 2019 brought in 5.051 million viewers and a 0.90 ratings score.
Currently, it’s not yet known how many episodes ABC is going to give Station 19’s season 3. With those strong ratings and viewership numbers, it should at least get another 17 episodes. However, with it starting in the midseason, we’re not quite sure what ABC is going to do. We know they could still cram in 17 episodes during that time frame. So, we’ll just have to wait and see once we get more details at a later date.
