Hey, “Grey’s Anatomy” fans. We hope that tonight’s episodes 19 and 20 were totally enjoyable for you guys, especially since it was indeed the very last one for this current season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy. Yep, that’s right, guys. Season 18 is officially a wrap as of tonight. That means you guys will unfortunately have to wait around for a good while to see more new episodes of your favorite show.
The good news is that new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy are definitely in the works because ABC totally renewed it for a brand new season 19 without hesitation! According to the folks over at Deadline.com , ABC gave Grey’s Anatomy a very early renewal way back in January 2022.
However, some negotiations did have to take place. They had to negotiate another one-year deal with the show’s leading lady Ellen Pompeo aka Meredith Grey. Apparently, she’s currently in a pattern where she’s just taking things year by year and only signing one year deals. She did the same thing for season 18.
They also revealed that Ellen has been promoted from co-executive producer to full-on executive producer for the new season 19. The other executive producer Krista Vernoff will remain onboard as the series’ showrunner. The other two, original castmembers Chandra Wilson aka Miranda Bailey and James Pickens Jr. aka Richard Webber signed multi-year contracts after season 17 ended.
During the renewal announcement, we got to hear from the chairman of Entertainment for Walt Disney Television Dana Walden. She had wonderful things to say about Grey’s Anatomy stating, “Grey’s Anatomy is a true phenomenon, beloved by audiences around the world. Whether they catch it live on ABC, or stream it on Hulu or globally on Disney+ or Star+, it’s clear that fans can’t get enough of Shonda Rhimes’ brilliant creation.
We have enormous faith in Shonda, Krista Vernoff, Ellen Pompeo and the entire creative team to unlock new, untold stories that will continue to focus on modern medicine, tackle the issues that shape the world around us, and resonate deeply with loyal fans for years to come.”
ABC also revealed a brief spoiler teaser for what you guys can expect to see in the new season 19. They said, “Season 19 will explore the ever-expanding world of modern medicine through the eyes of beloved returning and new characters.”
Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes expressed how happy she is about the new season 19 renewal stating, “I couldn’t be more excited that we get to keep telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season.
This is a true testament to Krista Vernoff, the cast, the crew and all the writers who keep the audience on the edge of their seat week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of incredible fans who have supported Grey’s Anatomy for so many years.”
Grey’s Anatomy’s current showrunner and executive producer Krista Vernoff also chimed in with her positive words about the show stating, “Grey’s Anatomy has a global impact that can’t be overstated. Grey’s touches, and sometimes changes, hearts and minds worldwide through the depth of connection people feel with these characters.
I’m excited to work with our extraordinary writers to dream up where we go from here, and I’m always grateful to our partners at Disney and ABC for letting us tell bold stories with real impact.”
