Johnny Depp & Amber Heard Trial Verdict Finally Revealed Today
Today, June 1, 2022, the trial for the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation lawsuits finally wrapped up, and we got the final verdict from the jury. According to a report from CNN , the jury found that Johnny was guilty of defaming Amber in one of the statements his attorney made, and they found Amber guilty of three separate statements she made to the Washington Post.
Johnny sued his ex-wife Amber for defamation over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Johnny was not named in the article, but he claims it cost him lucrative acting roles. Amber countersued Johnny for defamation over statements Johnny’s attorney made about her abuse claims.
The jury ended up awarding Johnny $10 million dollars in compensatory damages ,and $5 million dollars in punitive damages. The jury awarded Amber $2 million dollars in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages. Since the jury awarded significantly more damages to Johnny, it was a legal win for him.
Johnny actually set out to get $50 million dollars in damages, and Amber tried to get $100 million dollars. Punitive damages in the state of Virginia are capped at $350,000 dollars. So, the judge reduced the punitive damages award to that amount.
Amber was present in the courtroom when the verdict was read, and she just kept her eyes down. Johnny was not present during the verdict. However, he did release a statement about it saying, “The jury gave me my life back. From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.”
Amber also released a statement. Not surprisingly, she was heartbroken over it saying, “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.” How do you guys feel about the final verdict?
