Grey’s Anatomy Just Received The Best News Ever

Hey, “Grey’s Anatomy” fans. In this brand new article, we’ve got the most excellent news for you guys. I swear you’ll be wanting to pop open the champagne bottles once we get through telling you guys what it is. So, with no further ado, let’s get right down to business.

According to a recent report from the folks over at TV Line and a ton of other media outlets, your favorite show just got the green light from ABC to get to work on their new 15th season! As most of you are aware, this current season 14 is coming to a close with less than a handful of episodes to go before it wraps up.

This renewal news was certainly not a surprise for us. It was highly expected due to another year of exceptional ratings and viewership numbers. However, it’s still great to get the official confirmation from ABC. TV Line pointed out that Grey’s Anatomy will now be the longest-running drama series in the history of ABC! So, that’s pretty damn impressive to say the least. The renewal for the 15th season matches the runs that legendary shows ER and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation had.

The President for ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey had some very positive words to say about Grey’s Anatomy during the renewal announcement. He said, “Grey’s Anatomy has a special place in my heart, and millions of viewers feel the same way. Thanks to fiercely loyal fans who have been on this journey since the beginning, and new generations of viewers who continue to discover the joy and drama of Grey Sloan Memorial. The show is as strong as ever.”

Currently, it has not been revealed how many episodes the new 15th season will air. Judging by Grey’s Anatomy’s ratings and viewership numbers, we’re guessing ABC will order another 24 episodes. We’ll definitely let you guys know when the episode order count is officially confirmed.

It’ll also be a couple of months before we learn what season 15’s premiere date will be. But guessing from last year’s premiere date, it’s likely we’ll see it arrive in late September or something like that. Again though, we’ll let you guys know the official premiere date as soon as ABC announces it.

As previously reported, the show’s main star Ellen Pompeo aka Meredith Grey recently signed a new two year deal with the show that will pay her out a total of $20 million whopping dollars! Some recent unfortunate news revealed that long-time stars Jessica Capshaw aka Arizona Robbins and Sarah Drew aka April Kepner have been written off the show.

So, they will not be around for at least the 15th season. But, who knows? They may come back at some point. They were reportedly let go for “creative” reasons. The writers and producers felt like it was time for their characters to exit.

According to Parade.com, Jessica and Sarah filmed their final episodes on Thursday, April 19, 2018, and Ellen tweeted special messages to the both of them. She told Jessica, “Thank you Jessica Capshaw for bringing it the way you have brought it for 10 amazing years… what a blessing you are and what a contribution you made to television history.”

She told Sarah Drew, “THANK YOU to this lady….@thesarahdrew you served up the sugar and spice for 9 years and it’s been a blast. Your passion and talent for storytelling has touched so many people, provoked thought and Grey’s is a better show because of it and you.”

The ratings and viewership numbers for season 14 have been very strong. However, the viewership numbers have seen a pretty consistent dip during the last, couple of episodes. The premiere episode drew in 8.071 million United States viewers and got a 2.34 ratings score for the 18-49 age demographics.

The last episode 20 that aired on April 19, 2018 brought in just 6.928 million viewers and a 1.70 ratings score. That’s been happening since episode 18. Hopefully, those viewership numbers can bounce back before this season ends. The show is still in a safe zone with these numbers, but we don’t want to see them keep dropping.

In related news, Grey’s Anatomy is about to introduce us to a new, special guest character. It’s Alex Karev’s mother Helen Karev. She will be played by actress Lindsay Wagner. The Helen Karev character is scheduled to show up in the episode that’s airing on May 3, 2018. It’s episode number 22 of this 14th season, and it’s entitled, “Fight For Your Mind.”

ABC’s official description for it reads like this,”Alex and Jo go on a road trip to Iowa to find Alex’s mom, whom he hasn’t heard from in a very long time. Meanwhile, Meredith gives a presentation on her mini-livers project, which attracts a ton of attention; and Jackson works to rebuild the foundation after its reputation is threatened.”

According to Deadline.com ,the Helen Karev character will be a key role in this episode. Also, as far as we know this will be the only episode we expect to see Helen in. But who knows? They may have her on again in the future.

Speaking of bringing people back, Deadline also reported that actress Geena Davis is returning to reprise her role as Dr. Nicole Herman in episode 23 of this 14th season. Judging by her description in the episode, she will possibly have something to do with Arizona’s exit from the show. She’s supposed to tell Arizona about an “exciting opportunity.”

The last time we saw Nicole in action, she was unfortunately left blind after getting a brain tumor removed. This of course caused her to have to resign from her practice. So, look for Nicole Herman’s surprise return to take place on Thursday night, May 10, 2018.
