New Ride Along 2 Movie Received Mostly Bad Reviews From Major Critics
Universal Pictures dropped their new comedy/action movie, “Ride Along 2,” into theaters today, January 15th, 2016, and all the major,top movie critics have given their opinions on it, and it just didn’t seem to resonate well ,at all, with the majority of them, getting just an overall 32 score out of a possible 100 score across 24 reviews at the Metacritic.com site.
The film stars: Benjamin Bratt, Bruce McGill, Ice Cube, Ken Jeong, Kevin Hart, Olivia Munn and Tika Sumpter. We’ve posted comments from a couple of the critics,below.
A.O. Scott over at The New York Times, gave it a below average 50 grade, stating: “This franchise is lucky to have Kevin Hart in that role, and his manic comic energy is enough to make the sequel something other than a complete waste of time. But the genre is also stubbornly innovation-proof, and there’s not much new to see here.”
Tom Russo from the Boston Globe, gave it a 50 score. He stated: “You’ll have to be satisfied with a modest assortment of energetically comic moments here, because the story sure isn’t a reason to catch this encore, and neither are who-asked-for-’em cast additions such as Ken Jeong.”
Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a 50 grade, saying: “Ride Along 2 is the movie equivalent of a cover band. We’ve seen it all before, and often in much better films.”
Kevin P. Sullivan from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 50 score, stating: “Ride Along 2, which moves the action from Atlanta to Miami, plays more like a remake than a sequel.”
Frank Scheck from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 40 grade, saying: “With a storyline less challenging than that of a typical CBS crime procedural, Ride Along 2 is little more than a repetitive rehash of the original.”
Susan Wloszczyna from RogerEbert.com, gave it a 38 score. He said: “One of the loudest laughs arrives when we get to enjoy a scowling James re-imagined as a game character. Points for greater diversity in the cast as well, but, if there is a second sequel in the offing, please allow the women to be more than the sum of their body parts.”
Stephanie Merry over at the Washington Post, gave it a 37 score, stating: “The plot is paint by numbers, which puts pressure on the comedy to deliver. But it doesn’t.”
Alonso Duralde over at TheWrap, gave it a 30 score. He said: “The film’s most genuinely funny moment involves A.J.’s ringtones, which should perhaps come as no surprise — the stakes, and the laughs, are so small that Ride Along 2 was apparently designed to be watched on your phone.”
Mick LaSalle over at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 25 grade, saying: “It’s a formula movie, which wouldn’t necessarily be a problem, except that it’s a sort of bad version of itself.”
Stephen Whitty from the New York Daily News, gave it a ver bad 20 score. He stated: “Pretty as Bratt and Munn are, they’re not distracting enough to cover up for the screaming Hart and grating Jeong, who seem to be in a race to see who can play a more annoying character. In the end, it’s a tie — they both win.”
Justin Chang over at Variety, gave it a 20 grade, stating: “Another tired, witless and potentially lucrative attempt to spin an exhausted buddy-cop template into action-comedy gold.”
