Critics gave new George Clooney ‘American’ movie semi-positive reviews. Focus Features released their new action/thriller, George Clooney branded flick “The American” into theaters two days ago,and the top critics seemed pretty positive overall about the movie. However,there were some who didn’t like it quite as much as others,throwing in a couple of Cs,along with D. The movie stars: George Clooney, Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten, and Paolo Bonacelli.
Wesley Morris at the Boston Globe gave it a C rating. He said, “The movie makes up for his lack of crispness with visual sharpness. “ Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a great A rating. He said, “Here is a gripping film with the focus of a Japanese drama.”
Matt Pais at the Chicago Tribune gave it a B rating. He said, “All subtle paranoia and little action.” Luke Y Thompson at E! Online gave it a C+. He said, “If you like beautifully composed, static shots of George Clooney being kinda quiet in Italy, this is your movie.”
Owen Gleiberman at Entertainment Weekly gave it a C. He said, “The American ends the summer not with a bang but an existential whimper.” Kirk Honeycutt at the Hollywood Reporter gave it a C-. He said, “Nothing really adds up, and the ending is downright absurd.”
Kyle Smith at the New York Post gave it a D. He said, “a pretentious Euro-snore.” A.O. Scott over at the New York Times gave it a C+. He stated, “More evocative of the art house than of the multiplex.”
James Berardinelli over at Reelviews gave it a B. He said, “With an unhurried pace and a focus on character over action or plot, this film takes us into the mind and life of a hardened assassin and follows the story to its natural conclusion.”
Peter Travers at Rolling Stone gave it a B-. He said, “remote to a fault.” Amy Biancolli at the San Francisco Chronicle gave it a B. She said, “an immaculately shot study of loneliness and misanthropy in one dour assassin working a job in Italy.”
