New ‘Dumb And Dumber TO’ Movie Received Mostly Negative Reviews From Major Critics
Universal Pictures released their new comedy film, “Dumb And Dumber TO” into theaters this weekend, and all the reviews are in from the major,top movie critics. It turns out that the film really missed the mark with these guys, only garnering up an overall 35 score out of a possible 100 across 31 reviews at the Metacritic.com site.
The film stars: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Rob Riggle, Laurie Holden, Rachel Melvin and Kathleen Turner. We posted blurbs from a couple of the critics,below.
Ty Burr from the Boston Globe, gave it a “less than stellar” 63 score to start things off. He stated: “Everyone has piled into this dumber, sillier, more consistently funny reprise with an enthusiasm that’s infectious, and not in a low-grade medical way.”
Sara Stewart at the New York Post, gave it a 50 score, simply saying: “From time to time, it works.” Susan Wloszczyna from RogerEbert.com, gave it a 50 grade as well, saying: “Still, I laughed — enough to feel mortified at myself.”
Betsy Sharkey at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a 50 score, saying: “The sequel sometimes feels like a series of gags ginned up by a gaggle of writers who are not always on the same page.”
Inkoo Kang from TheWrap, gave it a 50 grade, stating: “The visuals remain homely and brutally efficient, the plot convoluted but the pacing brisk, and the humor often inventive and resourceful — and just as often tired or offensive (to women, people of color, gays and lesbians, old people, take your pick).”
Richard Roeper over at the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a 50 score. He said: “Carrey and Daniels throw themselves into the characters they inhabited 20 years ago, whether it means allowing their crotches to be doused, using their rear ends as comedic weapons, or just saying really stupid things. Sometimes it’s pretty damn funny. Almost always, it feels just a little bit desperate.”
Andrew Barker at Variety, gave it a 50 grade as well. He stated: “Sporadically very funny, mostly very tedious, and sometimes truly vile, this 18-years-too-late sequel nonetheless exhibits a certain puerile purity of purpose.”
Jason Clark from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 42, saying: “The ultimate sad realization is not that Dumb & Dumber To doesn’t match the original’s good-time quotient, but that it might not even be as good as—yikes — “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.”
Manohla Dargis at The New York Times, gave it a 40 grade, stating: “The Farrellys are still not much interested in film as a visual medium, and when Lloyd and Harry aren’t smacking each other or dropping their pants, you might as well be listening to a radio play. There’s a story, but it doesn’t matter, certainly not to the leads or the good-natured sidekicks like Kathleen Turner and Rob Riggle.”
Peter Travers from Rolling Stone, gave it a 38 grade, saying: ” The bad news isn’t that Carrey and Daniels got old, it’s that the jokes did. The spirit is still willing in Peter and Bobby Farrelly, the original writer-directors, but the sagging flesh is weak from prolonged repetition.”
Michael O’Sullivan from the Washington Post, gave it a 37 score, saying: “So maybe some of this is hilarious. Heck, maybe all of it is. It will not be everyone’s cup of tea, and it was not mine.”
John Defore over at The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 30 score. He stated: “When the gags a movie is most confident in — the ones it uses three or four times, as if they were sure things — involve pushing unsuspecting pedestrians into a bush or riffing on “Bond, James Bond,” something’s wrong in the yuk factory.”
Claudia Puig at USA Today, gave it a 25 grade, claiming: “If there was any doubt that most things in society have been dumbed down in the last couple of decades, Dumb and Dumber To could be exhibit A.”
Mick LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 25 score, saying: “This is anti-funny, where every attempt at a joke is like a little rock thrown at your face.”
Finally, Joe Neumaier from the New York Daily News, gave it the worst score you can possibly get with a big fat “0.” He stated: “From junky production values to the parade of unfunny supporting characters to its lazy energy, Dumb and Dumber To falls on its face.” Stay tuned.
