New Grey’s Anatomy Seasons 16 & 17 Are Happening. ABC Renewed It For Two More Seasons
Hey, “Grey’s Anatomy” fans. We have got some super great news for you guys in this article. It turns out that your favorite show will be sticking around for at least another two more seasons as ABC has officially given it another two season order!
We had already known that season 16 would most likely be happening since the show’s main star Ellen Pompeo had already signed a two-year deal worth a whopping $20 million dollars.
Now, she’s actually decided to extend her contract for at least one more year to guarantee that we’ll at least see a brand new season 17 too! According to the folks over at TVline.com, Grey’s Anatomy’s current showrunner Krista Vernoff has also signed on to continue her showrunner duties all the way through the future 17th season.
Krista will also take over showrunner duties for Grey’s Anatomy’s hit spin off show “Station 19” as it has been officially renewed for a brand new season 3. If any of you are Station 19 fans as well, this is extra great news for you.
Krista had some very positive news to say about Grey’s Anatomy’s future. She recently told TVLine.com, “I find myself thinking forward. It feels like the show could really go on. In the early years, we would pitch stories, and Shonda Rhimes would go, ‘Uh, that’s a Season 8 story. Let’s do that toward the end.’ Now we’ve doubled the expected lifespan of the show and told all the stories we talked about in the early years. So, we have almost a blank slate. Where do you go from here? It’s exciting!”
According to soapoperanetwork.com, Krista also revealed that she plans to further merge the Station 19 series with the world of Grey’s Anatomy!
She stated,”I’m thrilled to continue at the helm of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ and I’m honored and energized by the opportunity to run ‘Station 19,’ as well. To expand upon the world Stacy McKee created, and further merge it with the world of ‘Grey’s,’ is an exciting challenge.”
Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes also had some great words to say about this wonderful news. She stated, “Everyone at Shondaland is thrilled that our fans’ commitment to TGIT continues. We are so proud of Krista and Pete and the work they do. Making the choice to have Krista oversee ‘Station 19’ was easy. The creativity she brings to the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe continues a tradition of storytelling we hold dear.”
Looking at the LIVE ratings and viewership numbers for Grey’s Anatomy’s current 15th season, it’s not hard to understand why it was renewed for additional seasons by ABC. It averaged 6.808 million viewers per episode along with a 1.57 ratings score for the 18 to 49 year old demographics.
The season 15 premiere episode brought in 6.812 million viewers, and it scored a 1.87 ratings score. During season 15, the LIVE viewership numbers jumped to 7 million a few times. The most recent episode 24 that aired on May 9, 2019 brought in 6.369 million LIVE viewers and a 1.40 ratings score.
Currently, it is not yet known how many episodes season 16 will offer up, but with numbers like that, we can certainly see ABC having no problems giving season 16 at least another 24 episodes.
We’ll have more definite news about that at a later date. We’ll also be finding out what the exact premiere date is for season 16 later on this summer. Right now, we’re guessing that season 16 will debut in late September 2019 like it always does.
This great news means that we’ll, of course, see more spoilers, cast interviews, preview clips, photos and all that great stuff in the upcoming weeks and months. So, be on the lookout for all of that.
How do you guys feel about Grey’s Anatomy getting renewed for another two more seasons. Are you happy about it? Are you sad about it? Or do you just not care one way or the other? Let us know in the comments.
