Top Critics Gave New ‘Conviction’ Movie Mostly Positive Reviews

Top critics gave new ‘Conviction’ movie mostly positive reviews. Fox Searchlight Pictures released their new true life drama flick “Conviction” into theaters today,and the top movie critics gave it pretty positive reviews with mostly As and Bs across the board. The movie stars: Hilary Swank, Sam Rockwell, Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo, Clea DuVall, Juliette Lewis, and Loren Dean.

Wesley Morris at the Boston Globe gave it a B- rating. He said, “Conviction should have tried harder to create better obstacles for Swank.” Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a B. He stated, “Her determination is fierce, her rebirth is inspiring, and in Hilary Swank, the film finds the right actress to embody gritty tenacity.”

Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune gave it an A-. He said, “Her character’s determination is a given, but Swank finds her way into the role easily, without calculation.” Lisa Schwarzbaum at Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+. He said, “The filmmakers handle time shifts gracefully, and the casting is choice.”

Sean O’Connell at Filmcritic.com gave it a C. He said, “Is it fair to vilify a film that delivers what it promises but little else?” Ray Bennett at the Hollywood Reporter gave it a B+. He said, “Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell in a stirring real life tale of two decades spent trying to get an innocent man out of prison.”


A.O. Scott at the New York Times gave it a C+. He said, “Ms. Swank’s performance shrinks in scope as her character’s monomaniacal devotion to freeing Kenny takes over the movie.” James Berardinelli at Reelviews gave it a B-. He stated, “the true story behind Conviction is worthy of telling,although one could argue that a documentary presentation would be a better choice.”
