The folks over at CBS did put out a brand new, official press release for tonight’s, July 8, 2023 repeat episode of 48 Hours. So, we’re going to certainly reference it for this preview session. Let’s get into it.

For starters, this repeat episode of 48 Hours is officially titled, “The Case Against Michael Politte.” It originally aired way back on November 26, 2022.

In this repeat episode, the 48 Hours team took a deep look at a story about a 14 year old kid named Michael Politte who was charged with the murder of his own mother Rita Politte back in 1998! She was killed by getting hit on the head and set of fire right in her own home in Missouri. Michael was sentenced to life in prison three years after the horrific event.

Michael claims he was innocent, and he was finally able to get out on parole after a new law was finally passed in Missouri to allow it. It took 20 years for that to happen. In this episode, Michael talked with 48 Hours correspondent Erin Moriarty about who he thinks really killed his mother.

CBS’ official description for this repeat episode of 48 Hours reads like this, “Michael Politte was just 14 years old when he was charged in 1998 with murdering his mother, Rita Politte, who died after being hit in the head and set on fire in her Missouri home. More than three years after the crime, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder, though he maintained he was innocent.

He spent nearly 20 years in prison before a new law passed in Missouri that made him eligible for parole. Now out on parole, Michael Politte claims he knows who is responsible for killing his mother and talks with 48 HOURS correspondent Erin Moriarty in an encore of “The Case Against Michael Politte.”

An alternate description tells us, “Charged with killing his mother when he was just 14, a Missouri man out on parole after 23 years fights to clear his name, claiming the real killer is still out there.”
