Top critics gave new ‘Red’ movie OK reviews. Summit Entertainment released their new action/comedy flick “Red” into theaters today,and the top movie critics seemed to give it just OK reviews with a couple of B and C ratings. The movie stars: Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker, Brian Cox, Julian McMahon, and Richard Dreyfuss.
Ty Burr at the Boston Globe gave it a C rating. He said, “What might have been a guilty-pleasure romp is hobbled by poor direction, sloppy pacing, and a story line that can’t decide whether it’s farce or a retread.”
Roger Ebert at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a C. He said, “neither a good movie nor a bad one. It features actors we like doing things we wish were more interesting.” Michael Phillips at the Chicago Tribune gave it a B-. He said, “RED stands for Retired, Extremely Dangerous, though Reasonably Entertaining Diversion works too.”
Jason McKiernan at Filmcritc.com gave it a B. He said, “manages to avoid the pitfalls of its various genre trappings and focus almost entirely on kick-ass attitude.” John DeFore at the Hollywood Reporter gave it a B. He said, “Retired-spy action comedy keeps the goofiness in check.”
A.O. Scott at the New York Times gave it a C-. He stated, “risk is the last thing on this movie’s mind.” James Berardinelli at Reelviews gave it a B rating.
