MasterChef Season 11, July 21, 2021 Eliminated Tay Westberry (Recap)

Hey,”MasterChef” fans. Tonight, July 21, 2021, another new episode of MasterChef’s current season 11 did indeed air with judges: Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sanchez, and Joe Bastianich. They brought on a 4th, guest judge, which was the legendary chef Jonathan Waxman.

The contestants were given a California mystery box, which featured five, California ingredients: Santa Barbara prawns, sea urchin, wasabi, avocado and grapefruit. The contestants had to make a dish that included all five of these ingredients. If they missed including one of the 5 ingredients, it meant automatic elimination. It was revealed that the contestant with the winning dish won a dinner for 4 at Chef Waxman’s restaurant in New York.

The contestants were given one hour to make their dish. During the competition, Alejandro said he was having a tough time because he was allergic to some of the ingredients.

Michael told Aaron and Jonathan about his dish. Jonathan told Michael to try and bring everything together. Tay told Joe and Gordon about his dish. Gordon told Tay to make sure it’s not too hot.

Abe told Jon and Aaron about his dish. Jonathan told Abe to be careful with the shells. Suu told Jonathan and Aaron she’s making grilled spot prawns. They gave her some tips about how long to cook them.

Lexy told Jon and Aaron about her dish. Aaron told Lexy, “Make sure all of the ingredients are mingling and have a connection.”

Joseph told Gordon and Joe about his dish. Gordon and Joe told Joseph, “You cooked the prawns too early. You need to get a new set of prawns, or you’ll be in the bottom 3 for sure.” Gordon said Joseph’s prawns were like rubber. “He’s out of his element,” he said.

Anne told Aaron and Jonathan she’s making a sea urchin and risotto dish. Tay told Jon and Aaron about his dish. Aaron told Tay, “Be sure to cook the prawns last.”

Autumn told Joe and Gordon she’s making a New England style prawn chowder dish. They told her, “Good luck.” At one point, Jonathan said Abe’s dish seems too basic. They also weren’t sure about Autumn’s dish.

Suu ran into an issue with possibly not getting the prawns cooked in time. She literally waited until the last 90 seconds to start cooking them.

When the contestants finally ran out of time, Tay said he forgot the Uni butter, and it was too late. Abe was really worried he would land in the bottom 3 with his dish.

Next, the judges all walked around to take a look at the dishes. Then, they revealed that the top 3 dishes belonged to: Suu, Abe and Autumn.

Suu was up first. She presented a grilled spot prawns, Uni butter, avocados in grapefruit and wasabi dressing dish. Jonathan said, “The presentation is great.” Aaron said, “The cooking of the prawns is spot on.” Jonathan said, “The ingredients had a really good marriage.” Gordon said, “It’s restaurant quality.”

Abe presented a broiled prawns, Uni butter, avocado crema, grapefruit and wasabi salsa dish. Gordon said, “It’s rich and delicious.” Joe said, “It’s a great dish. Good job.” Jonathan said, “It had a professional touch.”

Autumn presented a New England-style chowder, citrus pan-seared spot prawns and Uni butter toast dish. Gordon said, “It’s good and delicious. Good job.” Jonathan said, “It’s rich and heartwarming.” Aaron said, “It’s cooked perfectly. The ingredients were well integrated into the chowder.” Joe said, “Well done. Good job.”

After the presentations, the judges revealed that Suu’s dish was the winning dish. So, she won the dinner for 4 prize. Suu, Abe and Autumn were pronounced safe from elimination.

Next, the judges revealed that Alejandro, Tay and Joseph had the bottom 3 dishes. Alejandro presented a grilled spot prawns, ajillo sauce with avocado, tomato salad, wasabi grapefruit dressing and uni dish. Gordon said, “It looks rushed.” Joe made a negative comment about the ajillo sauce. Jonathan didn’t like the way it tasted.

Tay presented a prawn tostada, cilantro grapefruit slaw and avocado wasabi crema dish. He told the judges he forgot the Uni butter. They had him go get the Uni butter from the fridge. Gordon said, “The prawn was cooked spot on.” Aaron said, ” You did well. It’s a shame that it needed more components.” Jonathan said, “It needed an extra step of boldness.” Gordon said, “It’s a shame you forgot the Uni butter because it’s delicious.”

Joseph presented a prawn pasta, Uni cream, avocado, grapefruit and Uni in grapefruit ponzu dish. Jonathan said, “I’m struggling to find out how this dish evolved.” Joe said, “It’s a dish gone wrong.” Aaron said, “You completely missed the boat on this.” Jonathan said, “It was strange to me.” Joe said, “It looks like a dump bucket. What a waste.”

After the presentations, the judges did say Joseph had the worst dish, but they had to eliminate Tay because he left out one of the five ingredients. They told Joseph, “You dodged a bullet.” Gordon offered Tay the opportunity to spend a week in one of his restaurants. Tay said, “I will leave with my head held high.”
