MasterChef August 17, 2022 Eliminated Fred Chang & Gabriel Lewis (Recap)

Hey, “MasterChef” fans. Tonight, August 17, 2022, another new episode of MasterChef season 12 did indeed air with judges: Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez, and Joe Bastianich. Tonight, we got a whopping 2 hours of episodes. That means two contestants got sent home.

Tonight’s first-hour episode kicked off with the contestants learning they had to do a tag team elimination challenge. In it, they had to make a 3-course meal that consisted of Mushroom Risotto for the appetizer, Beef Wellington as the main course and a Tarte Tatin as a dessert. Michael had immunity, but he still participated.

Bowen was paired with Shanika for this challenge. Willie with Amanda. Derrick with Michael. Christian with Brandi. Gabriel with Emily and Dara with Fred. They were given 75 minutes to complete this challenge.

During it, one person worked while the other watched and directed. Then, they had to switch when the judges called for them to switch.

Shanika ran into issues with the beef wellington at one point. Gordon yelled at Bowen to help her out. Joe and Aaron told Willie they should be doing the beef wellington before the risotto because it takes the longest to cook.

Gordon told Michael and Derrick to focus on their beef wellington over the other stuff because it takes at least 20 minutes to cook.

Fred mentioned that Dara didn’t press down on the dough hard enough for the beef wellington. Then, he told the private cams, “If we don’t get it together, I don’t know if we’ll have food on the plate at this rate” with a little over 30 minutes left.

Willie and Amanda were late to get their beef wellington in the oven, but they still got it in there. After all the time ran out, Fred told the private cams, “This is a disaster, but we got it done. We might be the worst team of the night.”

Amanda and Willie presented their dish. Gordon said, “I’m not feeling the risotto.” Joe said “The beef wellington looks like a loaf of bread, not a wellington. It’s cooked well, but the pastry part is a disaster.” Aaron said, “The tarte tatin proportions are correct.” Gordon said, “The tarte tatin is delicious. It’s the strongest part of the dish.”

Michael and Derrick presented their dish. Gordon said, “The risotto looks rich, like it was nurtured in love.” Gordon said “The beef wellington meat is cooked beautifully, but the pastry part of it is way to thick.” Joe said, “The flavors are top notch.” Aaron said, “I’m super jazzed about the tarte tatin.” Gordon said, ‘I would serve the tarte tatin in my flagship restaurant.”

Dara and Fred presented their dish. Gordon said, “The risotto needs seasoning. It’s bland.” Joe said, “The beef wellington seasoning is good.” Gordon said, “The pastry is not as good as it could’ve been.” Gordon said, “the tarte tatin pastry is undercooked.” Aaron said, “The dough was compromised.”

Christian and Brandi presented their dish. Joe said, “The risotto is profoundly flavored and delicious.” Gordon said, “The beef wellington flavor and seasoning is good, but the pastry part of it is undercooked.” Gordon said, “The tarte tatin pastry is perfect, but the pears are not caramelized.”

Shanika and Bowen presented their dish. Joe said, “The risotto is really good.” Gordon said,”The risotto is textbook.” Joe said, “This is the best rissoto so far.” Joe said, “This is the closest beef wellington to Gordon’s restaurant. Good job.” Gordon said, “Good job on the beef wellington.” Joe said, “The tarte tatin is really good, but the caramel is a little bit underwhelming.” Gordon said, “The tarte tatin was good.”

Emily and Gabriel presented their dish. Joe said, “The risotto is missing flavors.” Joe said, “The beef wellington is a little underseasoned.” Gordon said, “The beef wellington pastry is uneven.” Gordon said, “The tarte tatin pears are undercooked, but the caramel is delicious.” Aaron said, “I can’t enjoy the tarte tatin pastry.”

After all of that, the judges said, Derrick & Michael and Shanika & Bowen had the top dishes and were safe from elimination. However, Shanika and Bowen had the best dish. So, they won immunity from the next elimination challenge.

The judges said the bottom 2 dishes belonged to Dara & Fred and Gabriel & Emily. However, Emily and Gabiel had the worst dish. So, they decided to eliminate Gabriel. Gordon told Gabriel, “I’m missing the spark that I once saw, but you have amazing potential.” Gabriel said, “I could’ve been a little more vocal about what I thought, but I will keep working.”

The second-hour episode kicked off with the judges showing up on mopeds with the most popular dishes from Grub Hub. Then, the contestants had to randomly pick one of the dishes and make a gourmet version of it. To make things more difficult, they were given only 45 minutes to finish this challenge. Shanika and Bowen were safe from this challenge and did not participate.

It was revealed that Amanda had to elevate a chicken lettuce wrap dish. Dara had to elevate a spiced butter chicken dish. Fred had to elevate a spaghetti and meatballs dish.

Brandi had to elevate a chicken and waffle dish. Christian had to elevate a taco dish. Derrick had to elevate a empanada dish to a lobster tails dish. Joe and Aaron gave him advice and wished him good luck.

Emily had to elevate a burger and fries dish. She told Gordon she was making a steak tartare dish. he wished her good luck.

Willie told Aaron and Joe he was making a fried rice and orange chicken dish. They gave him some advice, but he was very confident in what he was doing.

Dara told Gordon about her dish. He gave her some advice and wished her good luck. Michael had to elevate a ramyun dish. He told Joe and Aaron he was making a korean style ramyun dish.

Derrick said, “I’m freaking out” with 20 minutes left to go because he was in danger of not getting his dish wrapped and cooked in time.

Fred told Gordon about his dish. Gordon said he worried that Fred’s dish might take too much time. Fred said, “I don’t wanna play it safe.”

Christian told Joe and Aaron he was making an enchilada dish. They liked his idea. Fred said, “My dough is coming out gummy, and I’m really nervous” with less than 15 minutes to go. Derrick said he was nervous about the time at less than 5 minutes left to go.

After the challenge, the judges took a look at the dishes and decided that the top dishes belonged to: Michael, Derrick and Dara.

Michael presented a Korean-Style Ramyun with Grilled BBQ Shrimp dish. Gordon said, “It’s delicious.” Aaron said, “It’s award-winning stuff.” Joe said, “I like the intensity of it.”

Dara presented a Indian Butter Chicken with Spiced Basmati Rice, Garlic Butter Chapati and Cucumber & Mint Raita dish. Gordon said, “It’s absolutely delicious. The sauce is magical.” Aaron said, “I love your boldness.” Joe said, “This could be served at anyone of my favorite indian restaurants. Well done.”

Derrick presented a Lobster En Croute with Aji Amarillo Hollandaise dish. Gordon said, “The lobster was cooked beautifully. It’s impeccable. I’m very impressed with the limited time you had to make it.” Aaron said, “It was so clever.” Joe said, “This was a very ambitious dish that was made to win.”

After all of that, the judges decided that Derrick finally got the top dish, and he was awarded immunity from the next elimination challenge.

Next, the judges decided that the bottom two dishes belonged to Fred and Willie. Fred presented an Italian Meatball Potstickers with charred Tomato Relish and Parmesan Crisp dish. Joe said, “It’s a bad version of Chinese food.” Aaron said, “It has zero seasoning.” Gordon said, “I don’t see this as an elevated spaghetti and meatball dish. It just doesn’t taste good.”

Willie presented a Chicken & Rice Meatballs with Apricot & Plum Sauce and Charred Vegetables dish. Joe said, “It reminds me of leftover chinese food. You sunk it instead of elevating it.” Gordon said, “It’s bizarre.” Aaron said, “The one good thing is the meatballs were seasoned.”

After all of that, the judges decided that poor Fred had the worst dish. So, he was eliminated. Gordon told Fred, “We’ve loved your baking in this competition, but the savory edge got the best of you.” Fred said, “I’m proud of what I did here, and I will keep on cooking.”
