New Terminator Genisys Movie Received Mostly Negative Reviews From Major Critics
Paramount Pictures released their new action/thriller film, “Terminator Genisys,” into theaters this past Wednesday, July 1st, and all the major,top movie critics served up their reviews. It turns out that the movie didn’t quite resonate well with them, getting just an overall 39 score out of a possible 100 across 40 reviews at the Metacritic.com site.
The film stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Byung-hun Lee, Courtney B. Vance, Dayo Okeniyi, Emilia Clarke, J.K. Simmons, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke and Matt Smith. We’ve posted blurbs from a few of the critics,below.
Peter Travers from Rolling Stone, gave it a 75 grade, stating: “Terminator Genisys fires on all action cylinders when director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) follows the model James Cameron set in the first two films, still the glory of the series.”
Michael O’Sullivan from the Washington Post, gave it a 63 grade. He stated: “Genisys goes back to what made the franchise work in the first place: not the machine inside the man, but vice versa.”
Christy Lemire over at RogerEbert.com, gave it a 50 score, saying: “Schwarzenegger has turned into your elderly uncle, dancing like a goofball at your wedding after a couple glasses of champagne. He knows he’s being silly, and he knows that you know, and that alone is supposed to be good for a laugh. But it’s not. It’s just sad. He has essentially become McBain.”
Mick LaSalle at the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 50 grade. He stated: “For all its weaknesses, Terminator Genisys is a “Terminator” movie that feels like a “Terminator” movie, more than did “Terminator 3,” not to mention the ghastly “Terminator Salvation.”
Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times, gave it a 50 score. He said: “The best thing in the movie is Schwarzenegger, who delivers the Guardian’s lines with perfect timing and creates an empathetic character, because as we know, nearly all the best movie robots somehow become just a little bit human as time goes on.”
Ty Burr over at the Boston Globe, gave it a 50 grade, stating: “”I’ll be back,” the man said, and he kept the promise, but I’m not sure we wanted him back like this.”
Sara Stewart from the New York Post, gave it a 50 grade, claiming: “JK Simmons provides a little comic relief, and sums up my feelings on this whole outing: “Goddamn time-travelin’ robots!”
Chris Nashawaty from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a 42 grade, stating: “The story isn’t just confusing, it’s a betrayal to anyone who’s invested brain cells in the Terminatorverse over the past 31 years.”
James Rocchi from TheWrap, gave it a 40 grade, stating: “The stunts and CGI and attendant action scenes are all simply fine; there’s nothing here with the stark simple power of “The Terminator” or the strong-but-strange brilliant inventions of “Terminator 2.” Instead, it’s all less-than-spectacular “spectacle” and plot convolutions twisting around themselves at the whim of the summer’s least interesting killer artificial intelligence.”
Justin Chang over at Variety, gave it a 40 grade, stating: “For all its initial playfulness, the script never rises to the level of surreal, cortex-tickling pleasure it seems to be aiming for, and for all its self-awareness it’s weirdly devoid of humor.”
Brian Truitt from USA Today, gave it a horrible 38 grade, claiming: “Terminator used to be a sci-fi franchise defined by its cool time-travel concept and even better special effects. Unfortunately, it’s “Hasta la vista, baby,” to those good old days.”
Michael Phillips over at the Chicago Tribune, gave it a 38 grade, stating: “Everything’s at stake yet nothing comes to much in Terminator Genisys.”
Mark Olsen over at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a 30 score, stating: “Terminator Genisys could be Exhibit A in why the current line of thinking in Hollywood regarding sequels/reboots/remakes often leads to terrible decisions and worse films.”
Manohla Dargis over at The New York Times, gave it a 30 grade, saying: “It’s amusing to see identical Arnolds clash like titans, but nobody here seems to have fully grasped that they had another heavyweight in Mr. Clarke.”
Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter, gave it a 30 score, stating: “Action scenes are accumulated as if mandated by a stop-watch and almost invariably seem like warmed-over versions of stuff we’ve seen before, in Terminator entries and elsewhere.”
Joe Neumaier over at the New York Daily News, gave it a sad 20 grade, stating: “One achievement of James Cameron’s “Terminator” is that it overcame its low-rent, B-movie trappings. The great sin of “Genisys” is that it costs millions and yet isn’t worth a dime.”
Finally, Joe Morgenstern from the Wall Street Journal, gave it the worst 10 grade. He stated: “What could anyone have said of the finished film except that it was finished? The fact the “critics” hated it made it even better. I give it an 8/10. Way better than i thought. Its definitely the Terminator sequel we’ve waited nearly 25 years for.
