Lionsgate’s new horror flick, “Daybreakers” hit theaters today, and the top movie critics in the biz have given it the proverbial “thumbs up” with some very good reviews. It got four Bs and only two Cs. It stars: Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, Michael Dorman, Vince Colosimo, Isabel Lucas, and Sam Neill.

Wesley Morris from the Boston Globe gave it a B. He said, “Daybreakers,’’ which is written and directed by the twin brothers Michael and Peter Spierig, has unexpected flashes of brilliance. It’s been shot and staged with unusual patience. All the scenes hang together.”

Roger Ebert over at the Chicago Sun-Times gave it a B- rating. He stated, ” This intriguing premise, alas, ends as so many movies do these days, with fierce fights and bloodshed. Inevitably, the future of the planet will be settled among the handful of characters we’ve met, and a lot of extras with machineguns.”

Geoff Berkshire of the Chicago Tribune gave it another B- rating. He said, “For a January horror release, “Daybreakers” is surprisingly serious and different. It’s a B-movie with pretensions to something more and the effort is worth a look for horror fans.”

Owen Gleiberman over at Entertainment Weekly gave it a C. He said, “The best thing you can say about the movie is that it pours some very old blood into a new plastic bottle.”

Hollywood Reporter’s Maitland McDonagh gave it another C rating. He stated it’s a, “bloody cautionary tale about greed, exploitation and the power of a righteous resistance.” Peter Travers from “Rolling Stone” gave it a B-. He said it, “brims over with fierce retro fun.”
